prettyfly4aporkpie

To run a mine you gotta have minors.

quantizeddreams

"Do you think those are the miners? Sure they they are like 3 years old. Miners not Minors. You lost me."

PaulClarkLoadletter

Tony Shalhoub is a treasure. And of course Rickman.

loics

Louis CK has a bit like that too

Hah! I like this!

I use it in my work meetings sometimes. "Can I get a volunteer for this? or is somebody gonna get voluntold to take care of it?"

Where_is_Tony

It's a big thing in the military.

Lc29dime

I found that if you volunteer for everything they stop picking you. Definitely worth the initial investment of time and sweat.

swampflame

Agreed better to pick your poison lest it pick you

Estroy

This was me in middle and high school, when the teacher wanted a question answerred and I actually knew I'd raise my hand answer often, which means I'd never get picked when I didn't want to be picked

Or Volunstarve.

Ap3X_GunT3R

Looks like you caught a case of free thinking. A few weeks of volunteering in the mines will clear that up.

[In the Soviet Union, that was called Sluggish Schizophrenia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sluggish_schizophrenia)

ojediforce

Thanks for sharing the link. I found it very fascinating.

“We need volunteers for the mines. All those who do not volunteer will be sent to labor camps. Oh look, a 100% volunteer rate! How patriotic.”

Perioscope

"You are free to make your own choice...the labor camp happens to be inside a mine. Do the right thing!"

meatball77

Three generations of punishment. . . .

aenae

To be fair, those children are probably so brainwashed and indoctrinated that it wouldn't surprise me if they actually went working there voluntarily just because the Great Leader asked them to.

hammer979

Nah, I mean that's a common western misconception. The children who would support the Kim family mostly live in Pyongyang or in the south of the country, where they would have a better lifestyle and many don't even know how their other citizens are doing. They know nothing else than what their leaders provide them, unless they are training for foreign spy service or are diplomats. If they are this high up the chain, then it's debatable whether they would be better off on the outside. That's why the leadership needs luxury goods to keep their upper class happy. They are loyal to the Kim family, so leadership showers them with the best imports. Guaranteed they are not the ones being sent to work in the mines as children. The children in the north would have access to smuggled media, TV shows etc from China. They *know* how bad they have it. They go along with the Great Marshall because they have no choice, not because they are brainwashed. They don't want their family members to disappear into camps.

kangadac

This. Reading *[Axis of Evil World Tour](https://www.amazon.com/Axis-Evil-World-Tour-American%C2%92s/dp/0595416047)*, the world view presented to the NK populace is carefully twisted: that NK has a quality of life better than the rest of the world, but this is constantly at threat of being undermined by the US and SK. It’s a bit like telling a kid, “You’re mom’s been hurt and is in the hospital; they sent me to take you to see her.”

ThePinkTeenager

That’s a pretty terrifying thing to think about.

popepeterjames

Dear NK: "Volunteer, or die" is called "slavery" not "Volunteering"

helloitsme123-

My thoughts exactly

willyolio

Genius! It's not child labor if they aren't being paid, right?

Manypotatoes9

My teenager wouldn't volunteer to get out of bed

Mr_Redstoner

Can confirm was a teenager

Uncrustables_2

As a former teenager and current person, can confirm won't get out of bed.

You're not a person, you're just a redditor!

As a former teenager, I can confirm this

The one where bubba smacks you upside the head for getting out of bed too slow.

ABetterKamahl1234

You say this like there can't be actual shitheads like my brother, who are incredibly self-centered and often apathetic towards the needs of others. Many have tried and failed to have him realize he's such a shithead. His friends even think he's an asshole all the time. I drove one to the hospital as he refused to help, he wanted to play videogames and order a pizza. I wasn't even that person's friend at the time. I've seen what people like that with "modern" parents get, same or worse result of a human being. You can't completely negate punishment as every single punishment is a negative thing. By design. It's a punishment after all. And short of abandonment, you can't realistically force a person to do anything at all. Humans are complicated, and there's no universal solution to raising them, especially when everyone has the capacity to be a shithead.

slothcycle

The way life expectancy is going chances are they'll be in the same place.

grizzlyadams3000

My sister just takes her 13 year old daughters phone and runs saying she’s gonna text everyone. Usually gets her up really quick

ThePinkTeenager

Teenager here. I will get out of bed for food, school, using the bathroom, and... okay, that’s about it.

you'd get out of bed for inhumane torture too, or so nk thinks.

Famine maybe

Vio_

It's covid. If it was famine, the children would be affected as well if not moreso.

beardingmesoftly

I don't know about you, but a lot of parents would starve to make sure their kids get to eat

werty_reboot

Take with a pinch of salt (like any news on NK) but: [Starving North Korean parents eating their children] (//www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2013/02/05/the-cannibals-of-north-korea/)

batture

(trigger warning beware) This kind of thing is known to happen during periods of great famine so I wouldn't be surprised. I once saw an old picture from the early 1900's of a couple in Russia or Ukraine that were selling the severed parts of one of their kids as meat at a market. The paren't eyes definitely told as much of a story as the rest of the picture.

tonufan

Rats and other rodents will eat their children if the environment is bad.

yacheberryy

I could believe it sadly. A north korean youtuber I saw talked about how people ask her for "traditional north korean recipes" but a lot of poor people were literally eating mud.

Rapdactyl

>north korean youtuber Wait that's a thing?

GeZeus_Krist

I would assume they defected.

Rapdactyl

I'd assume that as well but North Korean youtuber kind of implies they're *in* North Korea. I see how it can be read both ways though, derp

Jaymz95

You'd have to be quite sneaky

yacheberryy

Defected of course haha no way you'd EVER be able to do that from in NK

pod02dash

Holy shit whats the adult wipeout rate if they have to force kids to work

jabbadonut2

What adults?

SaintBrutus

Ok, the _world_ needs to invade N.K. now. Like, right now.

Shivshanks

they have like all their missiles pointed at Japan and South Korea.

WelshVikingLord

Last time the world tried that they attempted to genocide the Korean population, killing almost 20% of the DPRK population and destroying farms and infrastructure which led to famines and poverty after the ceasefire. Supporting an invasion is supporting another genocide.

ExtractionImperative

Okay but then we also need to fight companies like Nestle that use child slave labor in West Africa to process cocoa for chocolate and all manners of evil practices like that. It’s wrong whether it’s overt or disguised by the workings of the market.

Straiden_

Im all for it

ShieldsCW

Whataboutism

ninpho2246

Why? Us killing them and they killing us wouldn't solve anything. It just creates a perpetual motion for endless conflict. As the younger generation is pissed off that daddy had to get blown up, they want revenge. Our younger generation will grow up thinking all negative things as grandpa would say filthy things like Cotton from king of the hill. Create instability through propaganda, give them hospitality and love that away they will realize what they are missing each day. Give support through non violent means. The people will rise up and rebel like many generations have before.

MrBanana421

In theory but for Nk specifically, in practice, as long as they have the support of china, very little will change. Not that war is in any way a better option, there is just very little we can do about it.

Dwarfdeaths

I was born one morning when the sun didn't shine. I picked up my shovel and I walked to the mine.

MyUsername2459

It's a simple volunteering program. They can volunteer to work in the mines and farms. . .or they're volunteered to work at the reeducation camps!

Nemisis_the_2nd

You know the camps are bad when kids choose a mine over education. Edit: /s

MyUsername2459

Well, the stories of people who escaped from the camps (and lived) could help explain why their ~~death~~ reeducation camps are bad enough that mining is highly preferable. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbCo46dtki8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbCo46dtki8) (SKY News documentary on NK camp escapees) [https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/extra/o8x6gsb0wp/north\_korea\_prisoner\_guard\_escape](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/extra/o8x6gsb0wp/north_korea_prisoner_guard_escape) A long BBC News article/interview with a prisoner and a guard who escaped together (the guards want out of there as much as the prisoners) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ms4NIB6xroc](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ms4NIB6xroc) Google TechTalks documentary "Born and Raised in a Concentration Camp" on the children who are literally born prisoners in those camps, guilty from birth on the grounds that they are children of prisoners. . .and under North Korean law all their descendants for 3 generations will be born guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment upon birth.

StupidizeMe

*Orphans* volunteering to work in a coal mine for 10 years... Makes me wonder how the kids became orphans; their parents were probably executed for being dissidents.

montanunion

I remember reading a photojournalistic article about North Korea once where it said that a lot of the kids in orphanages there aren't actually orphans, but also children whose parents have given them up either temporarily or permanently (this is also common in many other poorer countries), so if the term is used that way their parents might be alive. Also if I understand the article correctly, the school children volunteering at the mines and the ten-year "youth construction brigades" (that 16/17-year olds enroll in) are two different things. My parents both grew up in communist East Germany and school kids -usually from early teens on - working in factories or on farms for a few weeks of the school year was the norm, the kids obviously weren't expected to do the same jobs as adults, it was more like a part of practical education. There were also "voluntary shifts" (Arbeitseinsätze) for example on holidays. The kids in the photos look clean, healthy and not undernourished so I'd be surprised if this wasn't something similar to that.

StupidizeMe

Perhaps. But the kids in the photo only look clean, healthy and nourished because they're being used for North Korean propaganda. That's why they have new clothes and are decked in flowers. Notice they only show a small number of the kids, and not at the mines/work sites.

WelshVikingLord

literally everything has to be an evil plot doesn't it? What makes North Korea different from any other nation. If Sweden had the exact same headline, would you be twisting everything to be the worst possible situation? I doubt it.

KidneyPuncher69

It’s North Korea so yea...

tasartir

That was some in Czechoslovakia. On high school you had to help for few weeks with your class during harvest. If you got accepted to university, you had to spend summer holiday before first year working on some menial position, to learn the struggle of working class, who pays your education. And as an adult, you had to sometimes work during the weekends on some project improving your neighbourhood, like construction of convenience store or pool.

montanunion

Oh yeah those weekend projects are called Subbotniks here... the funny thing is, in my hometown we're still doing them now thirty years after the end of communism because so much is underfunded (obviously actually voluntary now), for example repairing the local school or cleaning up parks and stuff like that.

404_UserNotFound

NK said no one got covid, but there is a large lack of working age people.

Fixmy59bug

"Volunteer" Is that volunteer as in "Do you want to volunteer to work or do you want your family to die"?

manwithbabyhands

They are orphans already

Sam010010

"X" for doubt.

Zakika

X to mine deposit.

BigMrTea

I know my toddlers love nothing more than back breaking labour

lbrtdy

I volunteered in mines and farms as a kid too, but it was on runescape.

poppypodlatex

Yeah working down a mine or in some farmers fields was exactly what I wanted to do when I was a kid as well.

bojanglespanda

"Child labor laws are the worst thing to happen to this country" - Ron Swanson

RonSwansonIsAMood

Sting like a bee. Do not float like a butterfly. That's ridiculous.

flogginmama

“Russia says citizens lining up to taste test arsenic”

Piphislu88

'North Korea confesses to national programme of forced labour for children'. There fixed your headline.

Pterrame

There’s no such thing as volunteering. Who are they fooling?

McNasty420

It works for Scientology and them getting around child labor laws

Stranger1982

Gunna press X to Doubt.

The_World_of_Ben

"would you like to work in the mine or be shot?" "Mine please" "Well volunteered"

AlexsterCrowley

“Kids *love* Minecraft.” North Korea probably.

mathaiser

What do you get when you throw a piano down a mineshaft? A flat minor

zigaliciousone

Dr. Evil: *volunteering*

Bigleftbowski

And the alternative is what?

outamyhead

Yeah, "volunteering".

Reganato

Well the other option was probably getting shot, so you'd probably volunteer too.

PlankLengthIsNull

How come I'm seeing comments saying "it's wrong of North Korea to do this to children" being downvoted? The *fuck*, reddit?

KamenAkuma

Kids being forced to work on their parents farm for no money isn't child labour but when they are forced to work on the statefarm it is?? /s but really don't force your kids to work long hours after school or before school as a means of free labour

rmprice222

I would just like to say I completely disagree with this view. Why do you believe that kids shouldn't help out on family farms? Second question, did you grow up in a rural community or a city/township

KamenAkuma

Im just fucking about but at the same time i mean it to an extent, if you use your children as labour at your for profit farm/whatever then that is child labour since they are underage and you are profiting of their work. Sure, chores are common but if it lasts for hours everyday, thats labour, and from the people i know that grew up on farms in mid America, that was just common practice and they dident see it as child labour until they grew up or burnt out at the age of 16.

kids-cake-and-crazy

They should be disgusted with themselves first of all even if a kid volunteered for a job like that you should never let them and we all know they aren't volunteering. We need to stop North Korea finally

FanofAndyB

Ok. I think it's terrible too. What's your plan?

R_Klement_06

“Disgusted with themselves”? You need a better understanding of North Korea. Lol

jabbadonut2

They seem to have an issue with understanding the definition of the word "volunteering."

NicNoletree

Probably something lost in translation

Dicethrower

I mean, why not. Who knows how conditioned these kids are. They might very well believe that working in coal mines and farms is a noble thing to do for their country. How many people in the western world happily die for their country for a piece of ribbon?

R_Klement_06

Don’t forget the college money.

victormaker

God fucking damnit, here goes reddit on another "kim jong un dead"-esque rant from a dubious source all over again.

WelshVikingLord

And everyone believes it without question, even though it's coming from British state-owned media.

D288

why do they even need to work? cant the glorious dearest leader invent a device that can work for them and feed them, like when he invented electricity?

roadhammer2

Yea ok sure,uh huh,yep,right

cheguevara9

As ridiculous as that sounds, it’s probably true. It’s the only decent chance those kids will have to get something to eat! Fucking sad shit like this happens around the world.

Frangiblepani

Now that's patriotism!

badscott4

All those who volunteer will receive food and your parents will ot be killed

SoakedSeahorse

I think the word they were looking for is 'voluntold'.

p-4_

Thats the funniest title i have read

Ezben

Dosent fucking matter its still incredibly unhealthy for a child to do suck labor intensive work thats why we have child labor laws

R_Klement_06

“Health” is a shifting value worldwide.

Wiserommer

Wow, we abolished child slavery in mid 1800s in the UK just goes to show how far this country is behind the rest of the world.

PlankLengthIsNull

I like how you got downvoted by saying "child labour is bad". I think we've got a few people invading the thread to downvote anything bad said about NK.

colin8696908

Defiantly not a sign of a failed economy. To give you an idea of how bad it is, the economy of North Korea is around that of the Gaza strip.

Vaeon

They should have said they worked for Nestle, Tesla, Nike, or Apple. Nobody would bat an eye after you told them that.

prettyfly4aporkpie

It's a holiday on Pyongyang, It's tough here but that's life

Metallicultist88

Excuse me, WHAT?

Ok-Nefariousness559

yes I too volunteer to mine for the leader

It really builds character!

Doesn't NK have oil? With all the mora high ground the Americans take before Invading a new country, what are they afraid of here? NK's nukes or China?

JohnnyKnifefight

Children really don't volunteer to work in enough mines these days. I think the kids of America could learn something from these little go getters.

emleigh2277

My kids won't even volunteer to make their own bed. Bloody spoiled western brats.

Why would I trust British state media to report the truth about North Korea?

bakedmaga2020

They got it straight from the lions mouth. Feel free to check out the KCNA webpage and see the kind of bullshit they put out. Idk what’s so hard to believe about a dictatorship publishing propaganda

PlankLengthIsNull

Some people (who are conveniently people who have never been to a country like NK) will defend these countries with their dying breaths and are convinced it's some sort of utopia or paradise, and they'll ignore any evidence to the contrary; even evidence that comes from the dictatorship government they worship.

Squm9

Tbf I don’t see why the “communist” monarchist totalitarian state would do this Completely out of character for them

dos_user

>Typically, however, images or video of young “volunteer” workers published by KCNA other state media outlets feature what appear to be teens or young adults who are older than the children shown Thursday. https://www.nknews.org/2021/05/north-korean-children-rush-to-coal-mines-to-repay-partys-love-state-media/

Catalyst375

So usually it's teenage orphans that are forced to work in the coal mines, and this is only an exception? Glorious Juche has truly established a socialist utopia!

aegiltheugly

>In April, leader Kim Jong-un warned his country to prepare for tough times ahead... You have to be a really incompetent leader for this to happen. North Koreans are not exactly living the good life now.

Work or you and your family starve is voluntary, right?

Reaver_in_Black

Of the unreported deaths in the country of North Korea I'm pretty sure these are all orphans and they're purposely making them volunteer to work
