Match Thread: Seattle Sounders FC vs Sporting Kansas City | Major League Soccer
By - MatchThreadder
Thank you, Kansas City.
Finally, Kansas beats Seattle. I’m still salty over ‘16
Our 2016 run kicked off after getting destroyed by KC 😏
I'll never forgive SKC for helping to usher in the Schmetzer era :-(
GG SKC, you guys came out and just played better
Amazing showing SKC. Wake up game for us. Midfield needs to be more robust and creative to be able to go the stretch. With or without the Roldans.
Thank you SKC
Gg, hope Vermes feels better soon
Fuckin way she goes boys.
And I’ll say it again…it’s ALWAYS fun when you beat a Cascadia kid!!!!! Congrats to the guys…and Melia is a BEAST!!! SKC TILL I DIE!!!
YES SIR! MN x SKC destroying Cascadia this weekend!
Midwest, 6 pts…Cascadia, 0 pts this weekend 😎😎😎.
Ahem... Just saying the Des Moines Menace beating Portland Timbers U23 to move on to the USL 2 National Championship... PNW taking all the L's tonight.
Glad someone from the Heartland is doing well, because KVFC kinda shit the bed this year.
Kaw Valley had it rough with all of Chicago, DSM, and STL all being pretty good.
He looks so fucking manly and I hate it!
GG SKC... you guys out classed us today
GG SKC probably the first game I felt we've been out-coached this year
Melia had a hell of a game and our improved depth this year has staved off our normal July-August collapse so far.
It’s hard to coach around gassed, called up, and injured players.
I really think it wasnt out coached... we had heavy legs and made huge mistakes on 2 goals.
Schmetz kept Rowe in when he was clearly getting beat. Thats a huge issue, because Rowe was creating catastrophic issues.
Honestly, I feel like Kelyn Rowe has gotten more MLS chances than anyone I can think of. He has played for good organizations and fanbases that have supported him, and yet has never been able to tighten it up to be consistently reliable. He makes mental errors that you’d expect from a young player every game.
I always wanted to root for the guy but so many of his issues seem like mental hang ups - a weird mix of arrogance and insecurity in his game.
Yeah.. i think Dobbledare there... i think Cissoko going down put a wrench in how he was going to sub. I think Dobbledare was a sub for Rowe after halftime.
Yeah I'm getting sick of these 3 game weeks.
3 game weeks during an international break is supremely stupid
Especially the international break for the tournament for the federation that MLS is a member of.
This just in. SKC is better than Austin.
Oven mitts needed for this take
19 games left. 18 of them in the Western conference. Table is going to get wild.
Did I miss something? Why do we only have 3 games against Eastern conference teams? Did MLS change stuff up this year?
Schedule is still fucked from COVID rules to minimize travel
That's good. I'd hate to travel 800 miles to Atlanta when we can instead travel 1800 miles to Seattle!
I mean, making us play Orlando or Miami would just be mean.
Need to watch some porn after this
Recommend a beautiful coming of age story instead.
Seattle @ Austin, last weekend.
Like he said, porn.
(Edit: a joke about how awesome it was, not about those underage boys)
Another victim of the Salloi
I was thinking how he isnt on the gold cup roster... then I remembered he is Hungarian
Honestly if the Euros were next month he'd be on the plane with them.
He is playing really well. I thought he might have needed a change of scenery the last season (hoped Sounders could get him for cheaper) but I was wrong.
The thing is, his xG numbers were still really good in 19 and 20. He just couldn't find the back of the net. But, from everything I've read at least, he put in the work in the offseason to not only ensure that he's still finding the good spots he was finding before but to fine-tune that aspect and also to clean up his finishing.
Yep, I think his xG in 19 was 10 and he had 0 goals
He was downright dreadful in 2019 and 2020. But he has found his 2018 form again and that just makes us so much better. Instead of starting Khiry Shelton on the wing who isn’t a winger, we have a real threat out there. Really happy he’s found his juju again!
I had faith that 2019 and 2020 were just being unlucky. When you have a -10xg in i think 2019 is just confidence if you are able to bring that back he will be scoring (which is what is happening)
Honestly we played horible, but unlucky on Rui's chip and Montero's bike.
I don't know if I'd call a great goalkeeper playing great "unlucky."
It is a great goal keeping to get a touch on it.. but it could've gone anywhere... he just happened to touch it in away it hit the post instead of going in the top corner. Thats why its unlucky... the same as it would have been lucky if it deflected the other direction eventhough it was a great chip.
Unlucky on the chip? Give Melia some credit!
Unlucky we were playing on "a shitty turf surface" that probably gives Melia a couple extra inches on his vert. On that nice plush, cushioned grass in KC, he probably doesnt get a touch on it.
Unlucky that Melia is so good?
Unlucky that Melia went with the XXL gloves with extra thick finger laces last night
Imagine the narrative if we drew or lost by only one. Then think of the alternate timeline where Ruidiaz didn't score last week.
Rui's wonder goal was just icing... we played well and a point with that lineup on the road is a win. SKC is the best team we have faced in many weeks... our injuries/call ups and congested schedule finally caught up with us
For sure. Can’t rely on those types of things. Lost because of our lack of shape and inexperience. Bound to happen sooner or later with the scrappy squads we’ve been fielding.
Oh for sure...it couldve been a different game with Rui's chip. But we played poor overall
GG SKC fam. You guys had some razzle dazzle moments tonight for sure.
I feel that SKC hangs 3 on us during our first meeting this time it wasn't a hat-trick
Bad take. Not every goalie is going to be Frei, Melia, or Robles.
He was left high and dry for two of those
1 was his fault, 2 were defensive errors where he couldn't do much about it. And even the one that was his fault started as a flop and ended as a banger
Hell of a match SKC. Looking forward to the next one, should be a war for the top of the table all year long.
Maybe because Vermes isn’t on the field
This was the first time in my memory that SKC we not super dirty. Gags, see you in KC
Did you not watch in 2019? SKC have been near the bottom of the league in fouls every season since then and were trending down in 17 and 18.
SKC haven't been particularly rough or dirty for the last few years. Hard to shed that rep though.
In terms of total fouls, Seattle is consistently one of the cleanest in the league. SKC has been hovering closer (2019 aside), and has really been doing a quietly good job of cleaning up the unnecessary fouls, poor tackles, and all that!
Frankly, I'd say Seattle's usually low foul count is a sign of their definite quality, as they get good results from clean play. Which is annoying, because it would be way more fun to hate you because you're dirty out there!
Well, we did not see them much last year.
So it really has been a few years. And it is good to see.
I feel like our matches agaimst SKC have typically been chippy, too.
rowe is like a chaotic puppy. i enjoy looking at him, but i dont want him driving any machinery or responsible for any decision making.
He's really hit or miss
It's weird cuz he was not this bad in his New England days
I mean, I'd rather not have a level headed and reasonable puppy operating machinery.
good luck all
GG KC. We'll meet again.
GG SKC! AND DONT FORGET TO UPVOTE MATCH THREAD!
GG SKC, y’all always bring it and today was no exception.
Man Shelton sometimes reminds me of a circa 2010 Nate Jaqua.
Well, GG KC. The first of three is done
Got to say, you guys have good commentators!
Thats mostly Stef Frei. Don’t expect him to stay in the booth tho
He could stay there, that's fine with me.
True, much less biased than most teams. Just as long as Keller isn't talking about " the easiest of tap ins"
~~True, much less biased than most teams.~~ Just as long as Keller isn't talking ~~about " the easiest of tap ins~~
Oh Melia you sexy bastard
Timothy F. Melia
WHERE IS THE FUCKING URGENCY???
Shhhh don't criticize the team or else people on here will tell you you're the worst
We used it on Thursday
Losing I get. Not having good players I get too.
But walking it and (looking like giving up)? Not the Sounders look.
I'm concerned that I forgave Garth too early with a short squad *before* the first game of the season. They pulled off a great unbeaten run, and now we will see if it was a fluke or if Shmetz really can hold off until the window.
I can't believe that cross came from Rowe.
GG SKC Melia is a real one
This truly was a game of great goalkeeping to secure the win for SKC
Rowe shit all day and then that
Hahaha this ref is tragic.
Pointed the wrong way for a free kick for one.
Ok I may have been a bit hyperbolic.
I thought he has been ok.
It’s not an excuse we deserve to lose. Just a few hilarious calls or non-calls.
Not perfect, but not game ruining.
Was that an indirect kick?
That would have been a really harsh backpass call
If you're talking about Melias save then no
Why is SKC fans so worried about 7 minutes stoppage time? We aren’t going to do shit with it
I'm not sure you realize how many late goals we've given up over the last couple seasons
Not worried just wondering why so much. Absolutely bizarre counting here.
We've gotten slightly better this year, but the last two were tragic. We dropped so many points in stoppage.
For the record, I was expecting 5, and stoppage estimates always seem like a plus/minus 2 situation.
Seven minutes for what exactly
To give Melia time to improve his stats some more
Anyone else just notice the digital ball on the ad was moving in sync with the game ball? Highlight of the match.
Rowe couldn't hit water if he fell out of a fucking boat
Love how Kasey Keller thinks Atencio should be a CB... why waste his ability to get forward
That's where Atencio plays for Defiance.
Keller should not be on TV
He's a good neutral...and he's better when he is in the studio
7 minutes of stoppage…ref confirmed Sounders fan /s
Water break, subs, and goals.
Nothing came of it, but it feels like refs are actually tacking on the right amount. A few years ago 4 minutes seemed like a lot of time.
Maybe he’s trying to make up for foul leading up to the first goal :)
hahah that brad smith sprinting backwards and then passing it between stef and him multiple times is just, wow
7 mins feels excessive
I’ll join in. 7 minutes?!?!
7 minutes of stoppage seems very generous
Yeah... its like a replay of the El Salvador vs Qatar match. Very generous
Where did 7 minutes come from? I could see 5.
I wish I had confidence that there was a guy with a stopwatch actually measuring the duration of stoppages.
3-1 is just like a normal score line? Can we stop pretending that losing 3-1 to a really quite good Sporks team is somehow super embarrassing?
I think it's fair to complain about getting outplayed by your biggest conference rival at home, why are you so offended by that?
it's not a great look to moan so much at the top of the table, for one
Gatekeeping on criticizing the team for a bad performance? What do they pay you? Come on, it's fine to admit the team didn't play well lmao you need to take it easy
There's a reason we play 34 of these
7 minutes of stoppage against Seattle. Of course lol
Makes no sense to me either. Should be 4 at the most.
7 minutes feels like a lot?
Even with the 3 goals and injury stoppage, 7 is quite excessive
Not over yet. But GG all the same.
Have to say with the lineups I’m not really worried about the performance.
Seattle fans turning this into "the excuses sub"...Rowe this, ref that, lineup this, coaching that...fun to watch. SkC are just playing a good game and the Seattle pressure has been weak. Welcome to the "everyone else's weekend" sub
KC has had a great game, but all 3 goals were avoidable by us. Not saying we would've won, but there was no need for us to give them 3
TIL criticizing one of your own team's players when he is playing badly turns the entire sub of r/MLS into an excuses sub. What else are we supposed to discuss besides the performances of the teams/players lol
Rowe played with more pressure than anyone on the team, his decisions were not great when on the ball, but his continued bad passes were because he won the ball more than anyone else on the team. His excessive time on the ball makes him an easy scapegoat for a lackluster game.
Edit: Wanted to give him his due in possesion.
We are concerned about that lack of effort.
His effort is great. He was the only one getting in the box a couple weeks ago. He is always trying, it just isn't working. He has just lost something with age. Sucks because I want to see a local dude kick ass.
The person I responded to edited his comment. He said we should be more concerned with the lack of effort from everyone else.
So your problem isn't too much criticism, its that we are criticizing Rowe? Rowe has been a turnover machine especially in the last few games. He does win the ball, and if you notice, no one is criticizing it. Its when he turns it over constantly that is a problem. And you can see tons of posts also criticizing mental errors like Arreaga falling asleep on the job.
So what's Rowe supposed to do when he's working hard and no one else is finding space to let him offload a hard-won ball? Just feel like you guys are a little to harsh on one of your hardest workers...
Finding space isn't the problem, he has just straight up missed several open players. And again its been a consistent issue all season.
I'll grant you I'm limited to ESPN+, so maybe I'm working with limited information (yall have tons of prime time games), just seems a little harsh on dude putting the work is all...
No doubt KC has played well.
But Rowe and Seattle has had multiple mental lapses leading to goals, can’t deny that.
We know we're losing. You don't want us to figure out why?
Edit: I'm blaming Rowe the most. And it hurts even more cause he's holding Lodeiro's spot for now.
Credit to your keeper Sporting, he hasn’t been deliberately slowing down the game too much
Rowe double agent, love to see it
Looks like a triple agent for you guys and SKC
Living on his own terms 💯💯
The TVA is about to portal in and take Rowe away.
Let's fucking hope
unfortunately this is not the aberration Rowe, this is just normal
Crazy how we are in mid July and just now playing Seattle. And we still haven’t played “our rival” Minnesota yet either
yeah schedule was screwey this year. We had both our LAFC and LAG games within like the first 4 weeks.
Guess next week in training is all passing drills
Rowe is where possession/momentum goes to die too often. Would love for him to succeed but damn
It's weird because I think he's better than most bench players in MLS, but he isn't good enough to start everywhere.
Agreed. I've said this before on here but he was definitely meant as a depth signing, but has seen too much playing time due to the injury situation.
I think he'd be a fine depth player.
Its like Pete Vagenas is being channeled thru him
Rowe with *checks notes* his millionth horrendous pass of the game
Can we sub out Rowe...jfc... glad A Roldan is coming back
JP needs to be close to yellow card accumulation.
Rowe has been terrible tonight
Rowe can not keep starting for this team
He's been a solid backup CM but he's been bad at RWB. Rather see Dobbelaere start there.
ARoldan should be back next match
and then Rowe will start in the midfield
Then Christian will be back?
And then Rowe will start in the midfield
Busy watching the Gold Cup but wanted to pop in and say LETS GOOOO SKC! GUT THE FISH!!!!!
I like this, you guys are cute together
Lol you are not even in a play off spot
*Impersonating General Hux “I don’t care if we win! I just need Seattle to lose”
