Hochman: As St. Louis anticipates Major League Soccer, Kansas City gives us a taste

What is interesting, I know many current sporting fans who will switch to STL due to ties to the city. What will those fans choose? Still root for our success? Root against us? Only when we play each other? How will this impact our footprint. Middle Missouri will have to choose. Iowa who favored SKC, will have to choose.

StarmanEreki

I grew up a St. Louis only sports fan until the Rams left, then became a Chiefs fan because my mom cheered for them, and decided to become a Sporting fan after St. Louis's first bid fell through. Even after St. Louis's bid got a second wind, Sporting has become my favorite team to watch in any sport. I will probably follow St. Louis City and may even go to a few games, but if they're playing Sporting, I'll be happy to see them get them get stomped.

jasontalks

Thanks for sharing. And what if SKC goes the way of other clubs and has droughts? Don’t make playoffs for three or four seasons, while STL shine. Still remain SKC loyal?

StarmanEreki

As a Cardinals and Blues fan especially, I'm used to teams either having long droughts or weak playoff runs. I love SKC not just because of the team, but also fond memories of my friends and I going to games, cheering with the Cauldron, and my time working for the club. The always jerseys rock too.

jasontalks

Love to hear it!

AsaSkyler

Same. I’ll gladly walk to the stadium from my apartment wearing Blue, cheer for SKC, watch STL play zero home growns, and get stomped. Go get a drink at the bar, and walk home happy.

Lexluethar

Grew up in stl and still a cardinals and blues fan. I've lived in kc for 15 years and grew a family here, I'll cheer for an stl soccer team but sporting will be #1 team. I've played youth soccer, high school and club soccer in stl. I'm happy stl is getting a team but I'll still root for sporting more.

GreenBlueEyedDog

There’s the door 🚪 ✌️

endlessly_curious

Define many. If, of course, know St. Louis people living here but I dont see them switching. Once you have a club, they are your club. You do not switch. I am a firm believer that you can tell a lot by a man by how he supports his teams. People who have a NFC team and and AFC team are wankers. Every single time.

cheeseburgerandrice

>Once you have a club, they are your club. You do not switch. I am a firm believer that you can tell a lot by a man by how he supports his teams. calling out a very vocal person on this sub and /r/MLS lol

jasontalks

All friends (colleagues) who grew up in STL and currently root for SKC have said yes = four people. Although my sample is small, 100% is not ideal. While it may be true STL transplants living in KC MAY maintain loyalty, if the role was flipped and KC never had an MLS team, instead STL did, they would have been the team I rooted for out of loyalty to region and access. And then when KC got a team, you bet I would switch to KC over STL. It would be gradual, but eventual. So, I can empathize with the idea at the very least. I recall seeing a fan base map a few years back for all MLS teams (showing their reach). And my first thought was if STL ever got a team we would be hurt.

Vladimir_j_Lenin

I’ve been dating a woman from STL and have found myself extremely excited at the prospect of their new team, of course I took her to a sporting game a few weeks ago to get her towards becoming a sporting fan, but I really am just as excited about the prospect of both cities having clubs and the new club competing in representing the midwest. If I move there after I get my degree i’ll be a sporting fan first and foremost, but I would definitely be at games supporting STL unless it directly affected SKC’s chances at winning a cup.

cynomyso

If I had a drink every time StL reminded everyone of their Soccer History I’d be sitting in detox

BoomaMasta

You **might** be safe if you also involuntarily vomit every time like I do. ... But probably not.

HydeParkerKCMO

The entire city of STL always falls back on their history, because that is all they have. That is what happens when your city peaked over a century ago. "We were bigger than Chicago in mid 1800s and hosted the 1904 World's Fair!!". And then it was all downhill. Unfortunately, many citizens refuse to accept their city's current place in their world. That is why that city has such a regressive, backwards-looking culture.

reluctant_dev

Lol, chill dude. It will be an actual rivalry for SKC and I would rather have bad blood between the two.

nordic-nomad

We already our assigned geographic rival in the Loons. STL will have to be rivals with Memphis or Nashville or someone over there who’s new to the league.

HydeParkerKCMO

“I admire everything Kansas City has done. But I think we’re going to do it so much better. And I’m not saying that to just talk trash. I’m saying that because we have all the elements in St. Louis to have an even better party than this. We have a history of soccer, we have a stadium in the city — not miles away — we just have fans that have been wanting this for so long, that when we finally get it, it’ll be awesome." This arrogant attitude is what really rubs me the wrong way about the "Loulligans" and other sports fans in STL. I am going to love to hate this team

GreenBlueEyedDog

>we have a history of soccer Our late owner literally started the MLS you absolute bafoon

BoomaMasta

Good lord, I hate that. I try so hard to just ignore that attitude, but it permeates so much of their sports culture that it's difficult sometimes. It's clearly not *all* their fans, but the frequency at which I notice it is startling. I *really* hope we end up in the same conference.

paintblljnkie

Try growing up in a family whose paternal side is all from STL, while I was born and raised in the KC area. Literally everything that happened to any KC sports team, they had a story about how better a STL team did it, or about how it's "just like *insert STL team* At this point I hate pretty much everything STL related. Can't WAIT to hear from family members that always gave me shit for liking soccer about how awesome the new STL team is

Impulse_Cheese_Curds

So Cardinals fans, but soccer.

StarmanEreki

Minus the 11 rings

cheeseburgerandrice

It's like the Twitter account @BestFansStLouis started doing soccer

spiffy9

I mean, when I lived in Lee’s Summit, I would’ve been like 90% jealous to have a soccer stadium downtown. Now that I live in OP, I’m like 3% jealous of their stadium’s location.

endlessly_curious

What attitude do you expect them to have. If it were in reverse, wouldnt you be the same? That is the attitude they should have. You dont go in to not be better. Why do it then.

HydeParkerKCMO

How about a little humility as the new kids and respect for a founding club who endured the dark days of MLS 1.0 and laid the groundwork for the league they are now joining. Instead of saying "we are going to be better, because of x,y,z", how about "we hope to be as good, or better".

endlessly_curious

This is sports, it is about being the best. They arent being disrespectful in the piece at all. They are just saying they hope to do it better and is exactly what I would say. They arent bashing us or being disrespectful.

AnusQuarterPounder77

Lol fuck St. Lewis Gonna love beating the piss out of them until they decide to move to LA

wackyzebra43

Oh god, please tell me you're one of those people that understands the real reason why the team left and that it had nothing to do with fan support.

AnusQuarterPounder77

No shit they had a douche of an owner, doesn’t make it any less fun to laugh about it

wackyzebra43

You'd be surprised how many people are completely oblivious to the shitty ownership. Especially when the national media absolutely blamed it 100% on the fans

wackyzebra43

Hi! St. Louis resident here. I started following SKC around 2013 b/c my brother was living there and I'd go to a game every summer. With STL City joining the mix, I will absolutely cheer for STL City as my main team. I'll keep tabs on SKC and keep the jerseys I have, but there's no doubt STL will be #1 for me. And I saw it here mentioned about looking down on those who have "2 favorite teams"... Miss me with that nonsense. Gatekeeping is one of the most toxic things amongst sports fans. As long as you've got good reason other than being a fair weather fan... Who gives a crap how many teams you support. Best of luck SKC, but when it comes to head to head... There'll be no love lost here.

BeefyFrito

I'm the same as you but in reverse. Grew up on the St. Louis side of the state so was an STLFC fan, moved to KC a few years ago, and it just became easier to follow SKC even though I kept tabs on STL and kept my jerseys and merch. So I plan on keeping tabs on STL City too because I have family there and my uncle bought me a scarf, but SKC will absolutely come first. And I agree, gatekeeping sports fandom is for some people but it's not for me. Like if people have fun rooting for multiple teams, who am I to question that?

IncognitoChrome

Same here with the XFL Battlehawks. If they ever did add a KC team I'd convert but have a soft spot.
