R/Kotakuinaction screams betrayal because of Kevin Smith's He-Man reboot/continuation
By - pornomancer90
THERE WAS A FIRE-FIIIIIIIIGHT!!
This was a fucking bomb dropping on Beaver Cleaverville. For a few seconds, this place was Armageddon!
What if it was one guy with six guns?
Why don’t you let me do the thinking, genius?
How could they touch the ground...when they haven't touched grass?
People out here acting like the original show wasn't dumb as fuck.
And literally just a giant advert to sell toys to children
I *did* however give us the Christmas episode where Skeletor shoots the two kids with a laser that..... puts coats, gloves, and hats on them.
Turns out brokeback mountain was manlier than true grit.
I've always argued that the most masculine thing I've ever participated in is gay sex. Zero feminine energy to disrupt our masculinity
Sensually caressing the homies is the manliest thing you can do
In the immortal words of Devon Banks, “Wanting to be with a woman? How gay is that? You win sex with a man.”
>* it's his way of "apologizing" for having success due to a serial rapist, he's outright said as much on his podcasts.*
Kevin Smith, *Silent Bob himself*, is bad because he doesn't like profiting off rapists.
It’s not just Weinstein that grants or denies opportunities, what do you expect when rapists and abusers place themselves in positions where they get to make these choices?
I remember an interview with Crazy Ex Girlfriend star Rachael Bloom talking about how weird it felt when it came out that Les Moonves was an abuser. He was verbally supportive of her and the show and didn’t show that side to everyone, but their success came at the cost of horrid behavior to other women.
These abusers cast a taint on everyone involved and nobody feels good about their place in an industry with known and many more unknown victims.
Who was the rapist?
Harvey Weinstein. A lot of Kevin Smith's stuff had the Weinstein company involved.
Also Kevin has said he feels a lot of guilt because early on he used to talk up how great Harvey Weinstein was for giving people like him and Tarantino opportunities not knowing what kind of monster Weinstein was. Smith had also fallen out with Weinstein years ago because Weinstein started to treat him like shit.
It's a large reason why Dogma's hard to find outside of used DVDs or something similar. IIRC it's also why there's been no Dogma sequel.
Weinstein Company owns distribution rights and isn't giving them back, even with Harvey himself in the shit he's in.
Maybe they'd prefer a family with no women in it
Yup. Women = Bad is the primary theme.
That thread reeks of incel more than usual, which is impressive given it’s KiA
These guys haven’t interacted with a woman (other than their mommy bringing them hunny mussy and tendies) since before the pandemic. Incels are reaching critical mass.
But there's [this woman](https://www.reddit.com/r/KotakuInAction/comments/oq9qg7/the_teela_show_starring_teela_created_by_teela/h6dl9m7) trying so hard to be One of the Good Ones™!
“The women were side characters that had their roles to play”
Shit. That’s exactly how your average KiA poster sees women in the real world
Let’s argue about cartoons and write manifestos 😎
Yeah that whole post was baffling from Weinstein to this line. How do these people come up with this shit?
These people probably wish they were birthed from their father's penis so they don't have to be associated with any women.
Imagine assuming the only reason you'd ever see women as people is if your wife and daughter force you to.
Family isn't bad, but any interaction with women other than asserting your dominance makes you a cuck. In these people's worldview family exists to be subservient to the alpha male head of household.
Their interactions seem to be exclusively in their head or on Reddit.
I can never get these alt right nerds they say degenerate sjw culture is destroying family units but then say having a wife and daughter makes you a sjw.
I swear they just want everyone to be as sad, spiteful and lonely as them.
Those people unironically believe that having a daughter means cucking yourself, wouldn't listen to a word they have to say about family
Yeah they're leaning real hard into showing off their inceldom to the world.
When he says I HAVE THE POWER he’s actually saying I HAVE ACCESS TO A BLACK MARKET PHARMACY!
Suddenly they think there is a steroid epidemic in Eternia? Did they miss the whole He-'Tits-the-Size-of-Watermelons'-Man from the original?
OP also calls him a “fake geek” at one point lmao. They are so out of touch with everything.
Fake geek? ***Kevin Smith*** is a fake geek?
I haven't seen him bite the head off a chicken, have you?
They'd be calling Stan Lee a woke old man outta touch with the world if he was still alive.
"Wow, okay, we get it already! The X-Men represent civil rights! Leave the politics out of my comics already! I'm gonna go read Watchmen and Punisher instead!"
Those halfassed edgelords were reading V for Vendetta too and *completely* missing the points it was making and its satire of 1980s British society.
"I loved apolitical masterpiece V for Vendetta, but why did that one woman have to be a lesbian? Seems pretty forced."
well he doesnt spend his time getting mad at a boogywoman made up in his own head so anything less than that is probably “fake” in their eyes
didnt he literally write comics or am i thinking of a different kevin smith
Daredevil, Green Arrow, Spider-Man and the Black Cat, Batman, Hit-Girl, Green Hornet, Kato, The Bionic Man, Marvel Knights... yeah, you could say he's written a few.
I've only read his Spiderman (I know it's Spider-Man but I always get a chuckle thinking about John Spiderman) and I loved it. Pretty dark, dealt with some heavy subject matter, but the writing was solid and the art was good.
Also the first time marvel acknowledged in comics just how a great a butt Spider-Man has
Guy's got an incredible rear end
Spider-Man looks better in that pose than Spider-Woman
Other than those, he hasn’t written any!!
Holy shit I was so lost for a while and thinking of Kevin Sorbo. The Hercules/He-Man thing got me mixed up.
An easy way to differentiate them is to remember that Kevin Smith has had more then one success in his life.
Hey Sorbo had Hercules and Andromeda.
But let's be real everyone stopped watching when Tyr Anasazi left.
One success? You must be talking about that time he stuck it to those libtard atheists by perfectly portraying one in God's Not Dead! His portrayal was so perfect (and definitely not a strawman) that I almost forgot he was acting 😎
It's kinda funny that Kevin Sorbo has, like, one real claim to fame and it's still fucking garbage.
His comic book shop in Red Bank, NJ is so rad. I was in the background of his reality show there.
Bigotry and all bullshit that aside, one thing I always find funny is that a lot of their complaints are often related to a character just simply being flawed. As though they think it's bad writing for a character to not be perfect in every way and for them to make mistakes every now and then. I also find it funny when they get upset when a story which centres around a typical "alpha male" protagonist is eventually faced with the reality that their recklessness, arrogance, and self-centredness aren't positive traits which actually impact those around them negatively.
Or they just ignore it. I've met chuds that love Archer and think he's the hero.
Let's be real, they're not ignoring it, they just don't get it lol. Kind of like how Borat is funny to racists because they just like the racial stereotypes but also funny to those who aren't because they can clearly see that the real subjects of comedy are the racists and racism itself.
>I also find it funny when they get upset when a story which centres around a typical "alpha male" protagonist is eventually faced with the reality that their recklessness, arrogance, and self-centredness aren't positive traits which actually impact those around them negatively.
It's because they like seeing that sort of character, and imagine themselves to be that character. So when that character's image gets destroyed, their image and fantasies also get destroyed. A lot of them romanticize that ''masculinity dream'', and if that dream falls apart their mindest and image also do fall apart as well.
It also is worth to mention a lot of those people's homophobia comes from that toxic masculinity baked mindset because they see non-straightness as 'femininity' that threatens their 'masculine' dreams and mindset. Well, some say that homophobia and misogyny are results of that mindset, which it shows.
There's also the fact that when a 'female' character is more nuanced with personality they dislike it because they also see that as some sort of a threat, something bad, something ''SJW'', something undesirable as if it personaly hurts their own feelings and mindset. It's another thing to consider about.
It's a pretty common thing in stories that the male action hero is written as flawed, even! Heck, it is almost a cliche that a male action hero is reckless or arrogant and that is a character flaw! This is nothing unusual! (I yell into the void.)
“Comics focused on white dudes for decades, then when that turned out to not be profitable and they moved to a wider appeal they became massively profitable. I can’t make that logical connection so I’m going to say that the smart thing for them to do is go back to just appeal to men”
Wtf happened to this comment section
*Kotaku in action*, heh.
Mass reporting causes automod to delete comments to be reviewed by the human mods
You mean you've grown up since the nineties? Maybe you wouldn't fit in at KiA.
Innuendo Studios made a video about the void of the 90s. The 90s were like the 50s but better, because you weren't under imminent threat of nuclear annihilation, and you know what? *They still sucked.* There were still fundamental problems with the system. "90s ennui" wasn't just teenage frustration. The 90s are a good place to look if you want to see the cracks in the American experiment.
Why do they forget the 90s was the era of heroin chic, dropouts and burnouts? I lived through them and was heavily into punk, and people who see the 90s with rose colored glasses are dysfunctional or lying to themselves.
Or were just rich white children during the 90s and don't remember the bad stuff.
FFS I remember exactly where I was when I heard Cobain died. The 90s were dark with a weird creepy veener of plastic and latex foam kids movies sprayed over the top of it (especially in the early 90s, Hollywood was WEIRD)
90s did have some great cartoons. Batman TAS, Animaniacs, Xmen.
Reminds me of the futsies from Judge Dredd. The truth is every generation was awful in its own way; what we remember is only what's good about it either from just hearing about it or from thinking that it was better because you were younger. The 1950s suffered from some pretty heavy segregation.
I have a co worker with a bi racial daughter and a mixed marriage who was talking about how great it would be if the 1950s were back. He didn’t like it when i pointed his marriage if not illegal where we lived would have made him and his children a social pariah, and that likely his daughters life would he a living hell of racism and sexism.
As a person born in 1980, the idea of looking back at the 90 as a golden era is just outright fucked.
Child of the 80s as well, teen in the 90s.
The only damn thing I miss from the 90s is older family members who are no longer with us. I wish I had been older so I could better appreciate them and learn more about them instead of being a dumbass teen who didn't get it. :/
There's a kid at my job who has a weird obsession with 80s/90s stuff. He says that VHS is way better to watch stuff on and it's super satisfying to have to rewind tapes after you're done. Like dude, you weren't even alive in 1999, what are you talking about?
I more remember rewinding as being kind of an obnoxious task I’d have to do after every visit to blockbuster. I was a kid with no patience whatsoever, so sitting there rewinding a tape just so I could watch a movie was terrible for 9 year old me.
I hate you for this comment. You’re not wrong mind you, but as a child of the 80s, and teen during the 90s, it’s making me feel old.
That said, the 90s were pretty good (culturally speaking). The music was good, the internet became a thing without dominating people’s lives. It feels like since 9/11 that people’s lives are filled with one bleak outlook after another.
Did you see 'Masters of the Universe'? It's a super interesting nostalgia filled trip, filled with interviews from the creators of the original franchise explaining things like the reason He-Man rode a green and yellow Tiger was that they had an excess of big Tiger models that they didn't know what to do with, so someone suggested spraying it weird colours and making him ride it. Boom, done.
It was *always* all about selling toys to kids. We just don't remember that shit because we were kids
> It was always all about selling toys to kids. We just don't remember that shit because we were kids
This is the shit that cracks me up whenever rabid 80s and early 90s cartoon fanboys(GI Joe especially) get on some rant to defend their fandom to death talking "sanctity of the show" without taking a moment how so much of those shows had a puddle's worth of substance and mostly were just a formulaic way to be extended commercials for toys.
It was basically boilerplate for the times to print money, the Marvel Secret Wars comic event was specifically made to push out toys of the different costume variants and all that noise.
I also like to think of the creators of a lot of these original comics and cartoons just tripping absolute nutsack while drawing things and making shit up as they go along, then sending it over to marketing who then chopped it all up to make some kind of sense while selling more of the stuff they had lying around.
And it's extra hilarious that the end result is that there are still people raging over which bits of which acid and cocaine fuelled marketing campaigns are 'canon' 40 years later.
Transformers was literally just a toy advert. It wasn't even disguised. It was also the weird time when they were making toys out of properly adult films. I remember having a range of Aliens toys (fucking scorpion alien...what?) and a Robocop who you could feed those paper caps down a slot in his back to make him fire his gun while making the living room reek of shit gunpowder.
> like me
There is so much wrapped up in this. The angst of these communities is so clearly driven by corporations recognizing that there are more consumers than white straight male americans and this is unacceptable to these people.
I like the part about how the woke SJW crowd won't watch the show because they're not actually interested in comic books. Which is the same talking point they keep repeating like a broken record about videogames and movies, no matter how many "woke" games and movies make a lot of money and gain a large audience.
Also, do they think woke people never consume media?
Just like how Black Panther was going to be a huge flop… or Captain Marvel… or Black Widow.
They still try and insist these films(along with the new Star Wars films) were flops. It was projected to make $1.3bn at the box office and only made $1.25, huge epic failure which somehow confirms my world view that I'm in the silent majority and everybody is rejecting these thing.
Ah but if it doesn't instantly become top 10 grossing movies of all time then obviously yea it flopped!
They still insist The Last of Us 2 flopped
And its ignorantly wrong. He-man and She-ra have always had a huge LGBT fanbase.
Adam is a queer icon
It was one of the biggest memes on the internet when I was a teenager.
I too grew up in the 90s, in the country so old media such as master of the universe was what I consumed on cable tv. I listened to all the Kevin smith interviews and podcasts leading up to the release of this show. I've only watched 3 episodes so far and I got to disagree. I think this show is designed for me. I've loved every second of it and wouldnt change a thing so far.
I'm just confused that people care this much about shit 80s shows.
> this franchise has been traditionally males
Ah yes, if it's marketed for boys then only boys liked it and that's their main audience
Seriously though the He-man She-Ra gender division was so bad that She-Ra's male villains had their toys released under the Masters of the Universe toy line and the main She-Ra play set contained a slime pit which couldn't be used with the She-Ra dolls because the slime couldn't be cleaned out of the dolls hair.
No that makes sense though, men don't have hair.
Come on now, men have hair. Men's hair is just one solid plastic chunk that's fused to our skull.
I miss having hair, I blame the 90s.
Can I take out of touch billionaire?
Only if you protect your phylactery.
That's what my super yacht is for.
Careful there, the operator class can evolve into terrorist class. I'd personally recommend the washed-up actor turned GOP spectacle class. At least we'll get free entertainment.
Thanks for the tip. I just rolled a Kevin Sorbo.
I rolled a Jon Voight. Specced into living skeleton.
Goddammit I rolled a Roseanne, can I get a redo?
Careful, you might reroll a James Woods.
Oh no, I got Adam Carolla
I especially love how they think The Last of Us, which Anita Sarkeesian consulted on, was some kind of anti-SJW love fest.
But it had women that didn't make them hard! And joel's shoulders were feminized! Cultural Marxism is out of control
All women make me hard maybe that's why their angry. They didn't get hard and now they are questioning things
You also need to have a permanent victim complex about everything. And constantly complain about being oppressed cause minorities and women exist.
>Just a constant, self-enforced misery that requires you to consume media for children and get really really pissed off about.
This is literally every conservative in 2021. Playing the victim over meaningless bullshit is a full time job for these people.
Because they have no lives and need something to rage about to feel relevant?
I like the copypasta that goes "we will remake the last jedi. We will remake the last of us 2."
I'm just confused that xoomers actually like he man, and refuse to admit that it was just bad 80s nonsense.
I have a friend who collects and sells toys and merch. There is still a huge fanbase of grown men in their 40s and 50s who still love He-Man and spend a lot of money on old toys and paraphernalia. That being said, I don't think this is mostly coming from gen-x man-babies. I think it's much younger group that don't even have a connection to the show who see another opportunity to stoke the fire and advance their reactionary agenda.
If they hate TLOU2 so much why don’t they marry it smh
I heard TLoU2 was the one responsible for the murder of Archduke Ferdinand
I'd say it invaded Poland in September 1939 but knowing the population of r/ tlou2 and KiA they'd probably like it more if it did
I know jack about the original GI Joe, but man, watching those movies... I cared even less about the series? Like, they were just the most bland action things using ridiculous sounding names from an 80s franchise. There wasn't much that felt like an identity to the brand.
GI Joe is way older than the 80's. My dad even had GI Joe toys and he's in his 60's.
Started in 1964
>all the She-Ra fans are jazz-handsing
Fuck yeah I'm taking this one 👋👋
>Craziest thing about the “murdered American culture” comment isn’t the length of it, but that they don’t even mention the G.I. Joe reboot movies and how terrible they were/are. I guess only reboots that pass the Bechdel Test are worth complaining about.
Only stuff that fits the narrative counts.
Remember when they were complaining about how she ras boobs were too small?? fucking morons
Oh yeah, that was hysterical. Also Glimmer was chubby, how outrageous! Such a bad influence on children!
I was definitely interested in checking out the netflix She-Ra after I watched Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts. My childhood was just slightly after the original he-man/shera so I don't know dick about it. (Outside what I've absorbed through memes and popculture)
The problem with a lot of these terminally online "nerd culture" types is that they are stuck on the idea that everything is aimed at them and when it isn't they don't know what to do about it.
I browsed the subreddit posts by controversial and they thought having gay characters in Overwatch means Blizzard was virtue signalling. And them virtue signalling explains the recent sexual harassment allegations against them.
So yeah, you're right. Can't wait till they find out there are women in the Bible. Is the Bible virtue signalling for women???
I hear there are even women in movies nowadays! Is there no end to virtues?!
My daughter likes she-ra😂👍
She-Ra is awesome.
I'm a, grown ass married man and I liked it.
oh, for sure: I plan to watch it some point. Was really pointing to it having an audience perfectly satisfied with it and everything not having to appeal to the KIA 'crowd'🙂
>. I don’t understand how a reboot is destroying all their happy childhood memories.
It's probably not. My bet is that most of them never watched the original and are just getting angry on the behalf of others because they love outrage.
These dudes are all way too young to have watched He-Man
Seriously. The show was on 40 years ago. I'm in my early 30s, and the show was before *my* time. I was aware of it, because I had some of the toys (thanks to thrift stores, flea markets, and me liking the Conan cartoon that had a similar look), but I don't remember the show ever airing when I was a kid. I think the only time I've actually seen footage from He-Man are in Skeletor memes.
I also can't help but think it's funny people think of shows like this as wholesome symbols of their childhood. He-Man was a show created entirely to sell toys. It's not like it ever had any real integrity or wholesomeness.
I'm still confused that people care this much about shit 80s shows. Should I be sitting around pretending that cyber chase was a masterpiece?
I'm 29 and I watched the show as a kid. Cable tv and teletoon retro.
Ya it’s the same as when they get angry about marvel “going woke” as though Stan Lee hasn’t been writing “woke” storylines since the 60s. They clearly have never read the source material for half the shit they complain about.
The same rightwingers are also mad because the new She-Ra design wasn’t a fuckable enough cartoon, it’s all incel-bait. ala Ben Shapiro claiming that his Doctorwife would NEVER have a wet pussy, it’s a crabbuckety death cult designed to keep grown adults as childlike and pathetic as possible.
>crabbuckety death cult
Y'all smell that? Smells like flair.
I always cringe whenever someone says something new "ruined their childhood". The old stuff still exists. If you don't like something, DON'T FUCKING WATCH IT!
Exactly. Like Drake and Josh is ruined because I can’t look at Drake without thinking about him being a pedo, but like Teen Titans isn’t ruined because of Teen Titans GO.
Not a week after hearing about that, I found myself watching a film in which Drake suddenly shows up -- *honestly very uncomfortable now!* -- as a petty, rude date-rapist -- *oh, okay?* -- who is then burned alive.
...what a fucking roller coaster, man.
I feel like you’re talking about American Satan. Am I correct in that assumption?
I feel like I need to hide the spoilers in that post now, but yes. Yes indeed :)
>Drake being a pedo
aw what the fuck?
> In 2021, Bell pleaded guilty to attempted child endangerment and disseminating material harmful to juveniles following an incident with a 15-year-old girl in Cleveland, Ohio in 2017 and was sentenced to two years of probation.
This is the shit cherry on top of the cake which includes finding out the main director of most of those corny shows had a foot fetish he kept sticking into everything.
Hey, mods, wake up. We got some pisskid brigaders massreporting comments in here.
Brigadiers mass reporting: I sleep
Chicken sandwich: Real shit
What the fuck did I miss?
A discussion between chicken sandwich vs chicken burger and in the middle a power tripping mod willing to fix society through reddit
Pick your side, here's your pitchfork, the enemy is on the other side, and no matter what happens, don't get banned!
"Brigadiers" is a bit too fancy a term for bed-wetting reactionaries
I don't get it either. What's the alternative here? Have a husband and son to prevent "SJW decline"?
Well yeah, anyone with a wife and kids is just an SJW. KiA users are the living embodiment of the 'crying wojack with a mask' meme.
Sjws are when you have a nuclear family.
I couldn't get past the guy that said having a family was causing Kevin to become sjw
Wonder if he's promoting a gay lifestyle in order to stop future sjws from being born
It is literally a sub for complaining about minorities in geek culture. Its a cess pit.
>Hopefully the government steps in at some point. When people who ruin popular culture are publicly tortured and publicly executed by the government, there won't be a ruined popular culture problem anymore.
Damn he's mad, lmao.
The comments and thread are likely being mass-reported by brigaders from KiA. Auto-mod starts to automatically remove comments when they receive enough reports about them.
Oh look it’s a sub that cries about raiding, doing the extract thing they claim to hate. Almost like everything they whine about is pure fucking projection.
The great thing is I watched the series and it was actually really good. So of course KiA hates it.
I'm gonna be dropping some spoilers here so tagging:
>!I was absolutely shocked at them killing off He-Man in episode 1 then 5. Skeletor died too then came back. Plus Teela taking a "Fuck you all!" approach instead of rolling over and accepting being lied to for years. Evil-Lyn coming off as redeemable and possibly setting up to betray Skeletor later. Also killing off Orko, wew.!<
It has the same animation team as Netflix Castlevania and seems to be effectively the Castlevania of Masters of the Universe.
Without the high amounts of gore and violence and swearing. I'd peg it as a TV-PG (with close to TV-14 in some brief scenes) version Castlevania, but for Masters of the Universe and as I understand it, it's a continuation of the original 1983 series rather than a full reboot.
I had no problem with Teela being upset with Adam for lieing. I actually enjoyed the show mostly.
I have a problem with Teela complaining about Adam lieing to her in front of His PARENTS WHO JUST FOUND OUT HE IS DEAD LESS THAN A MINUTE BEFORE.That's completely out of Character for the Teela from the original show.
The only other issue I have is they give Evil Lynn some great character development throughout the series particularly with regard to interactions with Orko(my favorite part of the show actually Lena Heady and Griffim Newmans voice work is great)and the just have her backtrack immediately in the last episode >!when skeletor comes back!<
It seems that KIA is brigading the post and are mass reporting and automod kicks in.
Have admins got involved yet, or does Spez secretly post there about SJWs?
KiA is supported by the admins.
Yeah so was The Donald, I'm just asking when it goes too far and they have to do something about it. Threats of violence or mass spam to other subs will get even subs that admins like in trouble. Interference with other subs is something they actually care about.
The admins personally intervened to save it. Could be Spez, could be another, but Spez has admitted they want to be one of the slave owners after the apocalypse occurs.
i’m pretty sure the kotaku sub is mass reporting comments out of spite, and the auto-mod bot automatically removes anything that gets a certain number of reports.
