it means “work will make you free”, right? or something like that, some lie they told those poor men and women and children
'Work sets you free' yeah. It was the slogan put on the gates of Auschwitz
Edit: A couple redditors also mentioned that it's on the gates of Dachau
i really want to visit auschwitz one day. i feel like it’s important for everyone to see, just to understand the gravity of how truly terrible it is. like yea, when you read it in textbooks it sounds bad, but i feel like when you actually see it in real life, you understand more
In Germany, visiting a concentration camp is actually a mandatory school trip. Every German will have visited at least one of them in their life.
I think it's a crucial part of our educational system.
i’m very happy to hear that. obviously not everyone in the world will be able to go, but i feel like if you can, you absolutely should. i’m glad to see germans making that a mandatory part of their curriculum
It’s looking like it should be mandatory for Americans too. Such fools.
Intelligent thoughts, oh wise one.
True, I did not think of that. But I'm pretty sure it's part of the curriculum in several federal states.
No it is not a mandatory school trip. But should be
it was for me, and it was no easy trip, even the usual trouble-makers and class-clowns were silent on the bus back home.
We‘ve never visited one. 12 years of school in Germany. Although many schools seem to do it with their students, it doesn’t seem to be mandatory.
I think it depends either on the federal state you live in or the school you went to. In my opinion it should be mandatory. For me, we had both the school trip (that wasn't optional) and the option to go there as part of our confirmation/Jugendweihe.
Don't go to Ausschwitz. Since it's the most popular one many people who don't respect it at all will go there. Sometimes Jehovas witnesses will go there and prey on emotional people by trying to recruit them. There are many other concentration and death camps in Germany/Austria and the experience is similar.
that’s disgusting. i cant believe people would do that. i remember seeing a girl doing one of those “cute girl lemme stick my butt out” poses in front of the gates of auschwitz, like it was a trendy fun tourist attraction. it was really really bad, but it makes me sad to hear that even MORE people are like that.
I visited Auschwitz when I was 16 years old. Even as a dumb teenager more preoccupied with not looking stupid in front of *that* girl, the place really weighs heavy on you.
We had a Holocaust survivor visit our school and tell her story. That shit was heartbreaking
I was there on a school trip when we were pre-teens (it's like 300 km/180 miles from where I live). The museum is haunting, but the commercial activity around it is (or was when I was there) just nauseating.
It basically became a theme park with ice creams, souvenirs and such just to prey on visiting children from school trips. There are fucking amusement parks in close vincinity of the place.
wow that’s terrible
I've been, everybody takes something different away, for me, I'll never forget feeling the scratches on the wall of the gas chamber, its haunting and so important that as many people as possible experience it so that the atrocities that took place are never forgotten
Also the gate at Camp Dachau
It’s at Dachau to
Yes. My father used to say it to me whenever he punished me and the punishment was doing yardwork, or something other manual labor thing like cleaning.
As you might suspect, someone who says that to a child probably isn't a good person. If so, you'd be right. I disowned him 3 years ago.
Take my upvote!
Er ist ein hurenenkel und hurensohn zugleich wenn er so was auf seinen truck packt.
The Germans are here, oh God oh fuck
Wir sind immer da.
What are you saying? Is this a threat? Are you going to kill me? What do you unnatural freaks wants?
To anyone listening, tell my mom I’m sorry, the Germans are just too many
Bruder, als ob das ein Wort ist hahaha
We are always here.
Always have been.
try not to make eye contact
Die Sache ist. Der Typ im Auto kann safe nichtmals deutsch
Sohn einer verbitterten Hure
Möge die deutsche Invasion dieses Threads beginnen.
Der Satz ist in diesem Kontext *problematisch*
Hey! I don't want any trouble around here, not in any language.
What trouble? We already achieved consensus :}
It will forever be insane to me that people latch onto hate campaigns they weren’t even alive for.
Demon man needs to find a hobby that doesn’t include bigotry.
Not just weren’t alive for but more than likely had grandparents/great grandparents who fought in ww2 fighting against this shit.
Can we get the full story? This sounds good.
Seriously, I already have popcorn going.
It’s popcorn time, I edited the original post.
Edit: Apparently it was removed? Don't know why, but check my profile where I reposted it.
Edited with story. Sorry it took so long. I had to do it and Uncle Bob justice.
Got added to a best but then got removed.
Edit: was able to get it from your profile — Comments. Good stuff thank you.
Please tell the story!

I would also like to hear this story !
Added the story.

I too would like to hear the story
Exactly! They call themselves "patriots" but seem to have forgotten which side the US fought for
“Patriot” unfortunately usually just means nationalist these days.
Narcissism, misogyny and Racism go hand in hand in hand. Every racist I've ever known also thought all women are inferior and are raging narcissists.
When you think your better than all women, in the narcissists head that immediately eliminates 51% of the population from competing with you.
Then you eliminate people of color...well things get even easier for the narcissist.
By the time you are done your only competition is other white males.
Throw in a gun, a lifted truck and a goofy outfit with a lot of patches and some bravado will carry you to the top. 'Merica!
It’s just a superiority complex at that point
They usually believe that we fought for the wrong side.
Or the fact that the person who owns this truck would have been gassed in the camps as well, I'm guessing he isnt exactly a hugely intelligent human tho.
Yeah boomers who are into that amaze me. Their parents were the “greatest generation” who fought against fascism; their parents must be spinning in their graves.
The greatest generation raised what should be called “the worst generation”
Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, and weak men create hard times. No idea who said it but unlike most sayings this one actually is very accurate.
Oh I know right?? What a doosh bag
I thought the Blues Brothers took care of these rascals.
Clearly they didn’t drown.
Bunch of knuckleheads is what they are.
Not to mention hitly probably woulda off'd all these fools anyways
Mindless idiots? Nah he would have been all for them being on the front lines getting shot first.
So indirectly offing them
I don't know, the mindless idiots who support the authoritarian state are among the most valuable people to keep around. Send the smart, thinking folks to the front lines.
And the people running them were the losers of the fight. “Go last place team who tried exterminating a segment of the human race, which I am a part of!” Evolution needs to make a comeback. Life is so easy guys like this are even figuring out how to survive.
Same thing with idiot confederate flag wavers. At least be accurate if you’re going to support a bunch of losers. The last flag they flew was this: 🏳
Anything for their tribes dear
Living in the midwest: These guys don't have anything left that isn't hate. They sold everything else to fund the republican party.
Blows my mind. The US had a whole generation fighting this, and these clowns latch onto Nazism like they never attended history class. Only the uneducated latch onto this BS.
What does it say?
Something along the lines of "Work sets you free"
Yeah because it’s the most popular color for cars, and thus the most likely color anyone, racist or not, would own, right?
Absolutely. You might even say it's an example of white truck supremacy. ^/s
To clarify, this slogan is what was written above the entrances of concentration camps, which were slave camps before they figured out how to gas everyone to death.
"Work sets you free" was an empty promise that if the prisoners work hard and do a good job, they get to leave.
Labour makes free is the word my word translation.
It means that you working would make you liberated.
It was written on the ports of concentration camps such as Auschwitz Birkenau
I’ve seen the phrase written over the gates in Dachau. It was an empty promise that those who were sent there should have hope. It only exists for psychological reasons
Unless you mean free in the sense that death releases you from your earthly misery.
***grabs M1 Garand*** OH HELL NO
EDIT: why the fuck did you give me platinum, its not even that funny
Grandpa didn’t take that shit. Neither will we
Or more disturbingly double entendre (I'm not sure the phrase), it could also be read as you'll work until you die or are made "useful."
Arbeit = work / labour / job
Macht = makes
Frei = free
Should read. - Papa hat mir diesen Truck gekauft
I know I can use google translate but COME ON. WE JUST WERE TOLD WHAT IT MEANT AND THEN YOU THROW MORE AT US.
“Dad bought me this truck”
I literally thought “damn it it’s probably funny too, but so much work”
Thanks for lookin out
Look up Auschwitz. Yes. That one.
"Work sets you free."
Have you seen the entrance gate to Auschwitz?
I worked with a holocaust denier, some shit he said would just piss me off. He now makes tons of money playing runescape all day and posting on 4 chan while doing tons of drugs. Stay Woke Bois lol
Nope. Never been.
"Work makes free"(in a word to word translation). It was written on the Gates of concentration camps to give newcomers a glimpse of hope before the guard would point at the smoking chimneys and say "thats your only way out", meaning the only way out was working until you die and getting incinerated.
*Labour makes free*
Was hung above the gates of forced labour camps to make the ones entering think that they could earn their freedom by working hard. And, well, you know what really happened.
For anyone who doesn't know what this means, it translates to "Work sets you free", and was found on the entrance to Auschwitz and other concentration camps.
Here in Austria you'd be arrested for that shit
I was gonna say, I'm Czech and I'm pretty sure this shit is illegal. Not in the US, and if you kick his ass, you go to jail.
Free to say what you want but not free from the repercussions of those words.
Also, it’s a crime in the US to go into a movie theater and yell “fire”. But, but muh fReEdUm!
Free to say what you want and not have repercussions from the government*
But yes there are a few limitations as you noted the fire one or yelling bomb in a public area. I'm sure these things make sense to you
I mean, freedom of speech in the sense of expression and thought, but there are plenty of examples like instigating violence, causing havoc like your example, and libel where if speech is a threat or other direct injury to others, it's not protected.
I think that is what the law has repurposed the open ended arguments of freedom of speech into. Similar to how we have the right to bear arms but can’t own tactical nukes as an extreme example. The laws of the constitution allow for limited amounts of “freedom” within reason and that reasoning can often be boiled down to what is considered to be safe for the majority.
Not quite. Instigating violence is not legal. Neither is saying something that could harm to someone, like the below example, yelling “FIRE!” in a crowded theater or something.
No we don't, there are obscenity laws for that.
Same in Poland, I'd give them 15 minutes on the streets.
And hopefully police would arrive early, because otherwise people could destroy the car.
I'd light that shit on fire if I saw that
Same, and i hate violence.
they would destroy his car if he is lucky or not around. He is probably gonna loose a tooth or two tbh
Here in Denmark you’d be beaten for that shit
I can imagine you'd be arrested for this in most countries but racism is pretty much socially acceptable in America nowadays.
If you think 99.9% of Americans would recognize that phrase for what it is, much less give a shit, you have much more faith in our country than I do.
"Work sets you free" It's over the gates leading into Auschwitz. I learned it in my Mississippi middle school history class. You're dismissing it as ignorance rather than people being outright hateful and thinking they're clever.
Yeah and 49% voted for the orange idiot. You are simply rotten.
That’s the problem, even that .1% is such a large number of people . Plenty of people in power for that matter so nothing will ever be done.
We've drifted so far from reality that calling racists bad makes *you* the bigot for not accepting their beliefs as valid.
Never thought of it quite like that.
Funny how people always jump on Americans as being the worst racists around when most countries deal with racism but the minority groups aren’t large enough to be known.
> racism is pretty much socially acceptable in America nowadays.
The total lack of historical understanding in this statement is profound.
Please go to other countries outside of the U.S.A or Europe and you'll see way higher amounts of sexism and racism and distrust of foreigners, I'd say we're doing quite well at ridding society of these people. Most of the far right is in shambles after 2017 and the Failure of Unite the Right.
It really depends on where you go though. Sure, the Us isn't the worst in these aspects but if you only compare yourself to the worst of the bunch, you'll never find a reason to get better
In most of Europe, anything that symbolizes genocide, nacism/fashism and similar stuff gets you arrested very fast. It’s prohibited by law. It’s frowned upon so much here it’s difficult to even understand that someone can have this on their car and not be arrested or assaulted on sight. If you tried to pull this in Europe, there’s a good chance you would get your ass kicked before the police managed to arrest you.
Boy I miss the multiracial utopia that once was the US of fucking A
No its not
And yet there are people going around with car stickers like this and swastikas on their arms and confederate flags... This has obviously hurt your feelings but if you had any significant experience of how racism is dealt with outside of America, you wouldn't be putting your fingers in your ears like you are now.
Also, downvotes don't mean anything.
To say this is the norm or socially acceptable in America is a testament to your ignorance. These people are on the fringes of society. A bunch of Brits called a black football player the N word on Twitter because he missed a penalty kick so I guess by your logic racism is socially acceptable in Britain. Every country has these dopes pushing their bullshit beliefs. To make a blanket statement that we're all cool with it is asinine.
Fairly sure this shit wouldn't fly anywhere in Europe.
Same goes for Germany. It's possible the get injail for this shit for couple of years.
I hate them
Get that license plate number
Are you on a mission from God to get your band back together?
It was the "Big Lie" told to concentration camp attendees.
It was more like mocking. Those people knew they wouldn't come out alive. The sign in Buchenwald was regularly repainted red from the inside so everyone of the inmates could see it.
Was the saying “Work will set you free”?
I would translate it as: Work is liberating or work makes free.
Work will set you free. Awful. Fuck these ppl
Not going to lie, if I saw that vehicle in real life I would key the fuck out of it.
Have any of those people have ever been in the same room with a history book?!
Racists and learning don't really go together very well.
Yes an American history book that is. They teach a fairy tail instead of history sadly. Just look at how a lot of Americans think the Indians just moved over and said here have this land and they loved happily ever after. Sad actually that a lot think like that but not their fault
The vast majority of schools in the US teach the truth of the Native American genocide at multiple points between year 6-12. The fairy tale version of Thanksgiving is only taught during the first few years of childhood education when kids are still making turkeys by tracing their hand prints. Which is more intended to give an idea of the holiday and why they have off from school than the actual history. Obviously you aren’t going to go into graphic detail about the atrocities of mankind with a 5 year old.
I’m sure there are some extremely conservative districts with terrible education programs which ignore the truth but they are an extreme minority in terms of numbers of students who receive an education in their district. Granted the uninformed people who received that education account for a disproportionately high number of extremely loud idiots but that is a universal phenomenon.
The Reddit narrative that every American is completely uninformed about the nations history and America alone is responsible for the injustices of the 20th century is even more ridiculous than the first thanksgiving fairy tale everyone harps on about.
I don't really think anyone in their right mind believes that
I want to ram into it, *so bad*.
“This is america, speak english!”
Anglo-Saxons first, the great race!
I'm curious where in IL was this found, as there's a big difference between Chicagoland area IL and south of I-80 IL.
‘I had to wear a mask and couldn’t go the gym just like the Holocaust. It’s communistic I tell ya!’
Land of Liberty, eh!
I had family exterminated in Auschwitz. This is beyond sickening.
That's sad to hear
Yikes bro. There always THAT guy
These same people go out and claim to be patriots and love America more than libs. Nothing owns the libs like admitting to being a fascist
sure hope nobody keys his truck beyond recognition
can you imagine soldiers (our grandparents) coming home from liberating the camps and seeing this shit?
I bet this bag of dicks thinks he's being clever with that shit.
Is this the ol work will set you free saying? Looking at the Germans in the comments on this one.
To me freedom of speech is different from hate speech
This is what America has become. I barely recognize her anymore. 😞
But it’s always been like that
Guess who he‘s voting for
I'm so glad to be alive in a time where it is so easy to do the right thing and be a good person; and it boggles my mind people can't do the bare minimum of literally just accepting the existence of other human beings with dignity and respect. Weird, man.
Someone needs a twilight zone moment
This poor guy never had a day off in his life
The Illinois driving test does not include a section on mental illness.
I’ve got a super strict dad from Germany that unironically says this to me whenever I’m working for him. Been trying to get him to stop for months but I think that just makes him want to say it more :/
Been too Auswitch. This makes me so mad! What a disgusting piece of living shit.
These are the same Americans who are super patriotic but they won’t see the irony because they are just ignorant 🤦
I don't know how they just call them patriots when they are supporting the same idiologies that America fought!
I hope somebody teaches this evil fuck a lesson.
Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck. This is awful
But that is the problem. Everyone assumes it is just white people who are the racists. I live in California one of the most diverse states in this country and let me tell you, racists come in all colors shapes and sizes.
Is this what was in auschwitz? Work brings freedom? This is disgusting
It’s the sign on the gate to Auschwitz. First thing that was seen to the prisoners as the trains arrived
While it's true I'm not aware of this guys motivation, I'm perfectly aware of the symbolism of this phrase, written in German and displayed in this arc. To consider that tho owner of this truck is not aware of that same symbolism is quite a stretch of cognitive thinking.
My question is, why cover his plate? He put that shit on his vehicle. Why not show the rest of the world EXACTLY who he is.
