What is that second one? Some sort of leafy stick insect?
We call it "lopend blad" (means walking leaf), but I think they're literally called leaf insects in english (Phylliidae)
fun enough, in English (eastern north America at least) we do refer to those in the video as leaf insects;
but we also have katydids, and generally refer to them as leaf bugs as well :) at least where I'm from, might be a regional thing.
online I usually see people refer to them as katydids as to not confuse them with leaf insects such as in this video.
edited for clarity.
A really interesting thing about these leaf bugs is that they change their appearance according to the seasons. So in the summer they are bright and green. And in the fall they get browner and appear more dry.
This has got to be the Reddit fact of the day!
It is a leaf insect, a phasmid related to stick insects. I used to keep all three of these insects at one point - Phyllium giganteum was the species of big leaf insect I had.
It’s a leaf bug- it’s like a stick bug but greener and fatter.
It's a stick bug that goes to the gym every other day.
Do you even leaf, bro?
It's a stick bug with leaves 🤯
Nah, that’s a different branch of the family tree.
I think it's a Giant Malaysian Leaf insect, but I could be wrong. Definitely some sort of leaf insect though.
The little piece of rice turning into the stick and the little brown bean turning into a leafy transformer are wild
They are called Insecticons.
I prefer Arthrobots.
Arthritis Robots Rollout!... But... slowly, did you take your medicine Barry?
This is the only situation in which I would choose the name arthrobots over insecticons. Kudos!
The prefix arth or arthro just means joints or jointed. The suffix itis means inflammation.
You learn something new every day! This is today's learning so everyone else don't message me.
I had the beetle insecticon when I was a kid. Had to put it on layaway to afford it. Hasbro had my number
Insectibots, roll out!
I thought they were called Predacons
Predacons are a separate faction that turn into, well, predatory animals, mostly.
What is even wilder: the Phasmatodea are able to do parthogenesis which is literally cloning themselves and throwing dozens of these rice corn clones around.. which is why I name them lovingly pestilence rods. :-)
Edit: It's all fun and games until they start reproducing so fast that they canabalize on their clonekins if you don't get them food..
To be fair, you could probably do that with humans too.
Cute smooth 7 pound baby as small as your hand..... BOOM super hairy jason momoa.
A 7lb baby as small as your hand??
Maybe OP just has big hands.
To be fair that could be Jason Momoa speaking.
Get stickbugged lmao
Except stick insect babies don't look like that. Their young are miniature versions of the adults just like how praying mantis young look like.
Even the Madagascar hissing cockroach don't look like the one in the video. The insect he has in his hand looks like it has wings. The cockroach nymphs doesn't.
Yep. I was wondering if it was meant to be eggs until the cockroach, which looked like a tiny insect, not am egg. I've raised a few types of stick and leaf insects and they all start out as tiny versions of the adult.
Baby leaf insect tax -
It really escalated quickly.
Some might say it was rather evolved.
Lmao dude you better delete your extra comments. You getting downvoted af
Reddit's been doing this for at least a couple hours. The comments, not the downvoting.
Any idea if the type of reddit mobile app used plays a factor? (using boost on android, btw)
For me its been doing that for a few weeks now
Same, dude I thought it was on my end.
It's a bug that's happening to me too. Poor guy getting downvoted
Yea this thread is buggy AF
I swear I have people following me just so they can down vote my every post.
I've got followers who have never posted anything, and most of my posts get one or two down votes, even if I post something like, "I like turtles".
I followed so I can upvote your turtle posts
I like the first two, but not the last.
"*Here come the Men in Black*"

The Galaxy hangs from a pussy
Like an Edgar suit
put my hands.....on...*my head*.......like this???
Well, first I was gonna pop this guy hanging from the street light. But then I realized he's just workin' out, you know. I mean, how'd I feel if someone came in bustin' my ass while I'm on a treadmill? Then I was gonna shoot this snarling beast guy, then I noticed he had a tissue in his hand and I realized, he's not snarling, he's sneezing, there ain't a real threat there. Then I saw little Tiffany, and I'm thinkin "eight year-old white girl, out on the street this time of night, middle of the ghetto, bunch of monsters, hangin' around with quantum physics books?!" She's about to start some shit, Zed! I mean, she's only about eight years old, those books are way too advanced for her. So, if you ask me, I'd say she's up to something. And to be honest, I'd appreciate it if you eased up off my back about it. Or do I owe her an apology?
I just had to watch that scene after reading your comment, fucking love it. Thanks.
Dead giveaway, DEAD giveaway
The fact he is Fisk in Daredevil blew my mind
The loose face and the way his posture makes his Edgar suit sag towards the end of the movie is something he developed too. Tell you hwat, that guy's a goddamn acting powerhouse.
Vincent D'Onofrio is great. Full Metal Jacket and Adventures in Babysitting both came out when I was 4, and my dad let me watch the former a lot. It wasn't until the 90s that I realized Private Pyle was also Thor the Mechanic in the latter lol they're such wildly different characters, with one being kinda hot, it was a bit mind blowing to realize it was all D'Onofrio.
Or Starship Troopers

I’m notoriously bad at song lyrics and the next line in my head goes “all in my Nintendo”. I’m sure it’s wrong but I don’t even care.
lol "They won't let you remember"
Pretty sure it's "they wont let you Nintendo"
This is now canon
“Ohhhh… was that your Auntie?”
lol my thoughts exactly , keep that last one far the fuck away from me
Don’t hate on the hissing cockroach. They’re nothing like the things that infest houses. They only eat leaves, don’t live in walls, and don’t move particularly fast.
I had some hissing cockroaches once. I had random kids knocking on my door to ask to see them, told them they had to ask their parents if they could come in my house (I was a total stranger).
Heard them run into the street and shout, "Hey Mum, that lady has cockroaches Can I go and see them?"
Even more surprised that permission was granted.
Also had a pet hissing cockroach (Jarvis). He was actually fascinating. The way their antenna move is brilliant. He was very cool and not at all grim.
He managed to cripple himself by shoving a twig through his gullet so I spent the last week of his life hand feeding him in the hope that maybe he’d get better. He didn’t though. He’s buried with my cat under a tree in the back garden.
My condolences, he sounds like he was a cool dude.
If it was like 20 years ago, not really surprising lol.
20 years ago was only 2001 :(
As if man, the 90s were only ten years ago.
I finally broke in my Doc Martins
What are you talking about? This absolutely would not have been the norm in 2001.
He ment the other 20 years ago, 1982.
Oh yes te beautiful days of the dinosaurs
They're probably forgetting how fast time flies and thinking of the early to mid nineties.
In general, I like to assume a pedophile wouldn’t tell kids to go ask their parents if they can come over.
Is that a bad assumption?
Yeah probably. Almost all sexual assaults and rapes of children (or adults) come from family, close friends of the parents, or a trusted member of the community (religious clergy, teacher, after school program volunteer, etc.). They’re almost never some rando creepy stranger living down the way.
That sounds like something a rando creepy stranger would say!
Well, we *are* on Reddit
That sounds like something my pedo family member would say!
The one on my street came to my house to ask my parents permission for me to come over because he had ice cream to share. (We had an established relationship, with him letting all the neighborhood kids plant vegetables in his yard)
You've got a very friendly pedophile on your street
My husband would be less uncomfortable with the stranger aspect of it but thoroughly freaked out by the roaches.
Thank you. When I was a kid I went to a zoo with a petting zoo area and one time they had o e those suckers and I got to pet it. My gf makes a disgusted face when I talk about it.
I'm making a disgusted face at your girlfriend.
Do they hiss?
Yes, though I believe what that actually is is just them forcing air through their spiracles, and not them actually doing anything with their mouths.
*sssss* I am scary snake *sssss*
They also charge at threats to scare them away. They can't hiss for very long ~~small lungs~~. Their last resort is to spit up a single drop of water on your hand. If all that fails, they don't know what to do.
That is fucking adorable
I got to hold one and they’re actually very cute. It didn’t hiss though. It needs to be pissed off or agitated to do that.
They normally do it when you first touch them. I used to keep them and when you go to grab one out of the tank then they will hiss when you touch them a couple of times before they stop. At the same time they also push their back against you to make you back off.
They still look like a living turd.
I'm still traumatised from this movie
I have them as pets and they are cool guys. They're also very clean and will actually clean themselves after being handled because humans are yucky.
And I know this is a bit backwards but their size makes them far less scary. (To me at least)
I’d hate to have a cockroach on my hand, but that thing I think I’d be ok with. Somehow them being bigger makes me feel safer with them. Like they’d be more predictable. Or something.
I almost had a reflex to throw my phone away.
Yes. If the last one was anywhere on my body, I would peel the skin itself by how much I would wash it.
1 - hmm neat
3- AAAHHHH CUT OFF MY HAND!!!!BURN IT!!!!
I dropped my phone when the last one appeared
British broadcasting corporation-roach
Wow the leaf one is insane!
It is called the Leaf Insect
Have a great day
I can't believe you've done this.
My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined
and the stick one?
Stick insect… we’re great at coming up with names
and finally, what about the fleshy one with the five legs
That one we call Rosanne barr
Third one is turd insect
Its a horsehead grasshopper, not a stick insect like some people are claiming - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pseudoproscopia_scabra
Wait till you fuckin hear this
"Leafy bug. It's a bug that looks like a leaf, called a leafy bug. Kelly Robinson baby, 57-0!"
A wise man once said "holy shit it's leafy"
It looks like it's from a videogame!
art imitates life
Well it is in animal crossing!
Lmao get stickbugged
Is this from something? I want to watch it
It definitely sounds like it could be a Gary Larson comic.
for those Out of the Loop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fC7oUOUEEi4
That kinda caught me off guard and scared me a little ngl
I was still trying to figure out if that is rice in his hand and boom - stickbug
lmao get stickbugged
How the hell did we get here
I'm gonna lie. It didn't catch me off guard.
You just had to traumatize the viewers at the end, didn't you? Lol
What the hell was the last one? I live in the mountains in the northwest so I've been lucky enough not to see anything like that, worst we have are beetles and the occasional bat under a pile of wood, I genuinely don't know, is that a cockroach? If so I had no idea they got so freaking huge
I was scrolling through comments to see if anyone mentions it by name. It looks like giant cockroach or something
Madagascar Hissing cockroach. I own one. They’re pretty cute but I’m not big on handling them, so mine mostly hangs out in his paper towel tube making a bunch of noise.
Does it actually hiss? Or what kind of noise does it make?
Yes, its a Madagascar hissing roach. I have a colony of these. They make excellent pets and feeders
I'm sorry... They *what?* You ***what?!***
Oh this came across like I eat them lol
I keep adults of these and feed off their young to my tarantulas. I only raise a few roaches. Otherwise I would have too many
That’s badass and also please never invite me to your house
People who keep Tarantulas or insects as pets usually also keep a colony of roaches to feed them.
Dubia roaches are interesting in their own right. They don't really infest if they get out and don't bite, and very nutritious for reptiles, especially if you gut load em real good.
Wtf this keeps getting ickier
> They make excellent pets
How? My biology teacher had some of these in high school, I never saw the appeal. Doesn’t seem like you can cuddle with a cockroach.
Pets aren't inherently meant to get cuddled? I mean, loads of people keep fish and last time I checked you cant cuddle those.
What I mean by excellent pets is that they are ridiculously easy to care for. They are cheap to get and to have over years. They will eat leftover fruits and live surprisingly long. Not to mention, they are impressive as fully-grown adults. You can make them a cool bioactive setup with real plants and yes, you can handle them from time to time
I guess that makes sense. It feels like a graph showing cost to own vs size is necessary here. But what do you mean “from time to time”? Do they not like being picked up?
Ok so I am from germany. Other countries may have different prices for this species. I paid 8€ for 10 adults of these. Then you feel fancy and get a glass enclosure. Maybe 30€. Potting soil you may have lying around, some sticks and stones from outside and a nice plant for 4€ at the garden center. And thats if you feel fancy.
I guess they prefer to not get picked up because they start hissing if you try
Mine used to quite happily sit in my head and just pop his head out the gap in my fingers, his antenna rotating round like some buggy robot. He was a great pet. Not at all gross. Totally clean in fact. I actually miss him.
>sit in my head
Men in Black confirmed
A Madagascar hissing cockroach looks spooky from an aesthetic pov, but if you've ever been around them they move like slugs on cough syrup. They're some of the most docile insects I've ever seen. You can legit just grab one with your hands and it'll barely move lol.
*The videos done, please gimme back my baby*
While this triggers my general bug phobia, this is pretty damn cool
I feel the same way. They're objectively very cool to look at, but at the same time they send involuntary shivers through my entire body.
Things like those are a good way to get over a bug phobia as they're so far removed from every day reality. My friend did a course with tarantulas to get over her fear of spiders
Might be doable, yeah. Though I don't think my wasp phobia will be cured very easily as it's rooted in stepping in a wasp nest as a kid, which resulted in me getting plenty of wasps under my clothes and swarming around me.
They doesn’t seem
To bug him
Bet he's Australian
As an Australian, this still bugs me.
The deadly shit isn’t scary, the big insects are tho. Redback spider? Eh so what didn’t need my sister anyways, big flying fucking christmas beetle? Yeah nah mate I’m good
had a huntsman crawling around on my bed while I was laying in it. jumped out of my bed and slept on the couch as soon as I noticed it.
You or the spider?
Hahaha definitely me!! The spider decided to sleep in my bed for the night
( •_•) They don't seem to...
(⌐■_■) BUG him
I think I'd choose the 2nd starter pokemon
From a vitamin pill into a GIGANTIC MONSTER!!!
Thanks, I hate it
That green leaf bro is THE COOLEST!
I never knew there were soo many types of rice
Cool but also gross
Cute and cool!
Now as long as they say off of me, I'm good.
They can remain cute.
So many cute Nope, but not the last one
It's amazing how Madagascan hissing roach are either kept as pet or absolutely avoided at all costs with no inbetween (I belong to the latter).
Slow down fam I need to look at them closely ;(
I like the leaf bug
This is nightmare fuel for me 😨
oh fuck no
"Baby" means egg in these cases, not larvae; in case you were wondering. The young versions of these insects look almost identical to the adults, only smaller.
Pokemon gotta catch em all
The leaf bug looks insane!
I'm getting a Silence of the Lambs bug nerd feel on this. And I'm ok with it.
Needs dramatic anime opening as background music
Not the huge roach:(
This gave me anxiety.
WHO’S THAT POKÉMON!? It’s terrifying…ahhhhhh
