POST-EPISODE DISCUSSION THREAD - S5E2: Mortyplicity
By - BarnyardCruz
Puppet Jerry After-credits storyline was a fucking trip.
They did world history twice- they went from cowboys back to christianity.
That’s America right now though.
Oh shit, that means it's the end times.
That means you're a decoy
You did Christianity after cowboys had me dying
With the Highlander theme playing.
edit/ yes, I am fully aware it is a Queen song written by May/Mercury but it was written as the theme song for Highlander and the episode references for Highlander is why it played the post-credit segment (and kudos for R&M for paying that royalty fee, it was the perfect song to use)
I imagine that’s what it’s like to do DMT
I was almost in tears laughing so hard.
Password: 8==D and 80085
That's amazing! I've got the same combination on my luggage!
Honesty great jokes
The 2nd password was so subtle they just slipped it in there while you weren't paying attention.
Do kids still use calculators in school that have a font that makes 80085 funny?
Just graduated high school. I can confirm that we still make that joke every year.
Did you get any of that?
No not really
Why are people having this reaction? Seems pretty straightforward. Rick was so good at creating a decoy family the decoy Ricks also created decoy families because they didn't know they were also a decoy.
What's the woosh for? A lot of people in the live thread also said this and they seemed legit.
Dan Harmons production company credit after each episode has the sound bite “did you get any of that”. u/skippyfa was just poking fun at how this episodes storyline kept re-establishing the context for each Smith family scenario.
Itsa good show
While there was some clone confusion during the episode, the quote is the audio line spoken by Dan Harmon on his production company tag at the end of each episode. Just funny that someone used the post-post-credit reference.
Yeah it’s a story of one Rick creating decoys. Those decoys create other decoys, ad Infinitum. Then they try to kill each other because they think the other decoys will want to kill the other decoys to not be killed themselves
I was kind of confused as to why they started changing shapes and bodies. Like the wood Jerry with the speaker box voice.
There was a flaw in the decoy where they created a slightly worse version of themselves. Eventually it led to some terrible versions.
Like how each time cells subdivide there is a chance of error in replication which over time leads to mutation...
All lives on earth are decoys confirmed!
Laziness. Per Rick
This episode exists purely to shit on the concept of a "canonical family" to follow in this series. Throwing in Space-Beth at the end to solidify the existing "canon" is a great joke.
I think the last family is pretty obviously the canonical one because of space beth
A Rick specifically said he made the decoys only have terrestrial adventures, so they’d always be on earth if someone tried to find him. So, yeah, I don’t think there’s any question they’re the real family. It also seems the decoys were cyborgs and not pure clones, even the good ones seemed to have robotic skeletons, so that will be another way to tell.
you mean androids, cyborgs are humans with cybernetic enhancements, while androids are human looking robots. sorry pet peeve of mine
I find it funny that the Simpsons were able to make Homer an Astronaut one week then the next week he was a Monorail conductor and no one bats an eye.
Flashbacks are sometimes in the 70's 80s or 90s depending on when the episode came out, Springfield is on the coast and next to mountains, desert, plains, swamp etc.
R+M fans put too much thought in to shit being "canon" and having an all connecting overall plot.
I just watch R+M like I would watch a Tom and Jerry or a Loony Tunes episode.
> R+M fans put too much thought in to shit being "canon" and having an all connecting overall plot.
Difference is simpsons and tom and jerry don't imply a consistency and plot.
Rick and Morty's Clone plot, Citadel of Ricks, Galactic Federation and Evil Morty are all consistent plots, so it's natural fans would want to identify a canon family and timeline.
It seems cruel to just fuck with fans and make them feel guilty for that.
If the creators didn't want fans to over-analyze the plot, don't create a plot to begin with.
They didn't create a plot. They left some bits open to fuck around in future episodes and the fandom got obsessed with there being some sort of overarching plot. Citadel of Ricks and Galactic Federation are just there for when the creators want a more spacey sci-fi story or want to pit Ricks against each other.
Seriously, Evil Morty appeared twice total (train episode aside) and people act like he's some sort of main antagonist that has to be tied with everything.
I can't blame the creators for poking fun at the fans that get pissy when the show isn't catering to their ridiculous expectations.
2 for 2 on Hype as fuck episodes to start out the season.
This season is gonna be awesome.
They’ve returned to the “take a sci fi concept and run as far as we can in 20 mins” and I love it.
I was actually shocked when the credits rolled. Like fuck no! but that Jerry puppet shit after was awesome
It had me from the first iteration, and then repeatedly flared out for the rest of the episode.
Sneak peek for next one looked pretty cool too
Allison brie seems to be voicing the Captain Planet character
So what does the betting pool say?
What are the odds of Rick fucking (kinda)Captain Planet?
I don’t know I think morty is in the running for this one
I like how lots of people are assuming she's gonna be like Don Cheadle's Captain Planet halfway into the episode
I hope they didn’t/don’t blow their load early but I think both these two have been TRIPPY and fucking excellent with a ton of laughs
100%, both of these episodes absolutely knocked it out of the park!
Easily the most overwhelming episode in the shows history lmao
My head hurts
Was pure chaos without anywhere to land the entire episode.
My jaw dropped so many times, even though they taught us to expect the families to die, there were so many times where I really thought it would settle down with one, and then nope, brutal fucking deaths.
For me, this is the episode where it really sunk in that "nope, you really don't know whether the "real" family is even alive anymore".
Like the one at the end of the episode with Space Beth is most likely the real ones...but the show always leaves just a bit of doubt. Like for all we know, the Rick and Morty from the first season could be long dead and we just don't know it.
> Rick and Morty from the first season
They already have Rick and Morty show up to another universe in S1, where they just take the place of a Rick and Morty who just blew themselves up in the garage.
So if that family was consistent, then they're a mix of one universe's R&M with another's Summer, Beth and Jerry.
Well we know it's a different Beth, Summer and Jerry.
And also one episode ends with the implication that they may have swapped Jerry's at a daycare.
There’s no way all the decoys died
Wood jerry is the last one standing...sort of
Yea you have to assume that if Muppet Rick had the plan to sit out the beacon fight there were other decoys who thought the same thing.
I think the only thing that is a given (based on the info we have) is that the final Rick + Smith family we see in space with Space Beth are the real Smiths (... until they're not).
One of the early Rick decoys we meet says in his decoy explanation that the decoys go on self contained **terrestrial** adventures. This makes sense as they wouldn't be useful decoys if they're off-planet when assassins arrive. It explains why none of the decoy Ricks had a portal gun, why none thought to escape to outer space/another, and why all the decoy families (as far as we know) were present on earth when shit went down.
Since this Rick is the only Rick we see off planet we can assume he's the real Rick.
even more than the train episode?
yes, bc by definition the train ep had a series of vague fake narrative structures
This is literally just a series of unrelated narrative free death sequences for any given edition of the entire family
but all of the family was fake
Decoys /u/rktaker43, very different
I lost track after the first wave of decoys lmao
there was nothing to actually track though
The level of sci-fi madness never let up during the entire time 20 minute run with at least 8 different sci-fi or existential spins along the way. This is peak Rick and Morty if I've ever seen it.
This episode was absolutely nuts and the post credit scene was easily an all timer
anybody know the song from the end credits scene?
post credits song is Queen's *Who Wants to Live Forever* - [link
Yeah, it's from the movie Highlander, which was referenced in the show.
Jesus Christ, I must be old. Never would I imagine someone actually not recognizing a Queen song, or at least Freddy Mercury's voice.
i think the post credits scene is the best they've ever done, honestly. i found it hilarious and was then in awe of how good it was.
season 5 is looking to be a great season so far
Anyone think that episode flew by?
Every live episode feels that way
Time flys when you're having fun
that was just the decoy episode for us decoy viewers o7
Out of everything in this episode I'm most shocked he returned for the end of the episode
He had to stay a little interesting.
Plus he was like scarred with all the violence he saw lol
If only they answered Jerry’s questions about him
He's like a Meseeks, who suffers if he's not hunted or killed, most likely
YOU SHOULDA HUNTED ME!
Some episodes feel like they're written for the sole purpose of trolling the audience. This is definitely one of them.
And I think those episodes are the worst in reruns because they aren’t very entertaining just very exhausting to tolerate
True, can’t really imagine enjoying rewatching this one
The gimmick of the episode was definitely discovering that they were all decoys so that loses a big point on a rewatch. Really good episode on a first watch though. But all the crazy death animations and tiny details of the decoy families easily deserves a rewatch
You discover it pretty fucking quickly tho. Was any of those deaths unexpected after the second or third one? Is hardly a twist.
I've rewatched the first episode of this season 4 or 5 times already. If I got back to this one, it'll only because I'm doing a full season rewatch
Right? I know I'm desperate for Rick and Morty when I go back and watch Anatomy Park again
I really like Anatomy Park, and it's not just because the board game is surprisingly fun.
This is legit thw first episode I am about to rewatch right after, so I beg ti differ.
This episode was 22 minutes of “you’re not that guy pal”
I'm not your guy, buddy
I'm not your buddy, friend
I'm not your friend, guy.
Trust me. You’re not that guy.
My only disappointment with this episode was that the muppet Smiths weren’t actually muppets.
That doesn't mean a Muppet Smith family didn't, or still does exist
I’m sure there’s an actual Muppet dimension somewhere.
I figured after all the fake-outs, I was finally privy to any more that was gonna get shown, but the muppets one managed to get me.
I am so glad I was not high for this episode
I’m so glad I was
I was and it was a mind fuck
Fucking loved the post credits scene. This episode was a mind-fuck, but the twist of the original family being in space cracked me up. Loving this season so far.
Does it even matter at this point? Lol
"Original" beth jerry and summer are still stuck in the kronenberg dimension
And then there’s the squirrel dimension.
The situation in Argentina...
To be fair, I don't think they jumped dimensions
The reason the squirrel memory was removed from Morty's mind is most likely because Rick made a deal with them
they said at the beginning that all the decoys couldnt leave earth right?
They also said decoys can’t build decoys… sooooo…
I suppose you could assume that the decoys would build their decoys with the same restrictions, all without realizing they're under the same restrictions.
I fully expected that to be the ending when rick said that the clones go on “terrestrial adventures”. The “real” rick will have to be doing something extraterrestrial/in another dimension
What a classic episode. Mindfuck concept with some awesome battle scenes and a few great jokes. It didn’t go much of anywhere, but that’s the beauty of the show. It can be a show about nothing and still work.
Yeah I mean for all we know each episode could be a decoy family
It was mentioned early on that the decoys only had terrestrial adventures which is why none of them thought to go off-world, even the one who pointed it out. Like the family on the water who said it was pointless to hide-- that would’ve been absurd if he had a portal gun but he clearly didn’t. So it’s clear that the space faring family at the end was the real family.
Unless there's a higher-level of space-faring decoys above the terrestrial ones!
I don't really think that, but with this show, who knows?!
We Seinfeld now?
I think the point of this episode is that the real Rick and Morty is just whichever one we happen to be following. Maybe it's C-137 Rick and Morty. Maybe it's not. We don't know and for plot purposes it doesn't really matter.
I think that's what they were going for.
I enjoyed the episode ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
It was mentioned by a decoy family that they only had terrestrial adventures. If a decoy family knows that fact then it kind of eliminates it because they turned out to be decoys.
The portal gun thing though, that feels like a giveaway.
Right. They didn't use the portal gun even once in the entire episode.
Maybe Rick C-137 didn't even made a decoy family. Doesn't matter in the end, I agree.
The bar code fart joke was hilarious..
Yeah that got me ugly-laughing irl.
1000% expected Rick to ask Morty to lick his balls
Keith David is still president!
Somebody get that man a Diet Coke.
It's funny because the Diet Coke thing is [definitely a reference to Trump's Diet Coke button.](https://twitter.com/tnewtondunn/status/1352284365854806017)
His lines in this episode were short but so memorable.
I look forward to seeing him again this season
That fucking after credit tho
That was one of the best ones I've seen.
I kinda headcanon that the Jerrys were extra asshole-ish because Rick made them and would obviously make Jerry obnoxious so everyone would hate on him again.
But the first one was right. Why *does* he always want to be hunted?
This was one of the best episodes. I watched it with my grandpa & he hasn’t watched a single episode & he was laughing out loud.
Kind of an intense first episode
Yeah coming in blind this would be info overload hahaha. Think the only one more overwhelming would be the train one from last season
I'm so happy it made your grandpa laugh, did not think this show could connect with the older generation. You gotta tell him to watch the rest of the show!
This episode was NUTS lmao I loved it. They broke the 4th wall a ton but my favorite time was when Rick shot down the suggestion to split up and introduce a B-Plot 💀The pacing was incredible and a subplot would have certainly taken away from that. Great second ep!!
Everyone on Reddit is a decoy except for you.
Was this the interdimensional cable for the season?
It clearly wasn’t improvised
Neither was mortys mind blowers and the story train.
I thought it was going that way with When-Wolf
It's like Rule 34, but Asimov Cascade.
So the main thing that makes me not question whether the Rick and family at the end is the word “Terrestrial”. None of the Ricks tried to escape into space or into other dimensions, they basically all stayed in the same general area. Which makes sense because Rick wouldn’t want his faster-than-light speed travel or portal gun technology in the hands of anyone who killed a decoy family.
He also didn't want them to create new decoys.
That Rick with the deformed face had me rolling. What did he wear a mask for lmao
Texas chainsaw massacre rick
Probably trying to look more beautiful
Morty didn't chop his balls off with the laser whip
I was waiting for it as soon as it appeared.
Very impressed with the story writing.
I love the idea that the entire thing happened and presumably the "real" family had 0 clue of all their decoys killing each other. Post-credits were brilliant. I love seeing Rick and Beth have a small shift in their dynamic, Beth is finally sticking up for herself and her family and much more willing to confront and argue with Rick than before.
Man that was breakneck speed and packed to the brim with jokes
thats an episode worth watching multiple times
shit there was a quick fakeout to interdimensional cable in the first couple of scenes
Highlander reference was the best part
There can only be one...
Okay, Justin Definitely has a piss kink after Summers bucket list request was peeing on the ocean
"at least when I'm gross it's on purpose" is one of my favorite lines in the show
Yeah, that's at least 4 times now that they did something involving her peeing.
They actually have a photo of Summer in front of the bathrooms at their studio.
You should’ve hunted me
So it seems like the real family was in space while all the other Decoys killed each other, with the ones being killed by Mr. Poopybutthole being the "original" decoys that Rick made.
Rick was now alerted that his decoy died but does not know about any of the recursion that just occurred with the Chain we were following the entire episode.
That wasn’t Professor PoopyButthole. That was Mr. Always Wants To Be Hunted.
Not a fan of this episode, really just felt like watching the same thing over and over again. Felt like the concept was dragged on way longer than it should have been.
And then it just sort of… ends
There wasn’t any resolution. I guess the lack of resolution was supposed to be the point, but they tackled the “how would you know if you are a clone??” question in other episodes way better.
Same here was very meh. It was funny the first few time then got really repetitive. The after credit scene was amazing tho.
"It's Rule 34 of an Asimov Cascade" had to be my favorite joke, RIP anyone googling rule 34 because of that.
I wonder if Mr.Wants to be hunted the same type of being as Noob Noob and Mr.Poopy Buthole?
How dare you forget about Stealy
Steely? Oh fuck he's got my insulin.
This show is at its best when it comes up with an interesting exploration of a sci-fi trope or situation, so seeing this "what if I'm a copy?" premise taken up to 11 was great.
The twist about the squids and the ending felt like they were writing themselves out of a corner, but still overall was a great episode.
Man they went to Christianity AFTER cowboys??? Immortality is a bitch.
This thread is the decoy thread.
Seeing youtube channels try and piece this one out is going to be hilarious
Another attempt by the writers to get the fans to abandon the inane obsession with the "original" Smith family.
Rick and Morty have jumped dimensions at least twice, there's the implication that they picked up the wrong Jerry from daycare, and there's no telling which Beth is the original and which was a clone.
This season feels like the writers literally used an AI to generate crazy ideas and ran with it.
**I FUCKING LOVE IT**
That’s 2 episodes in a row now where they in some way teased the backstory of Diane (beths mom) might mean something for later this season...
I have to say even though I loved the episode I’m confused. Did we ever see the real Rick? Is there even a real Rick?
Or is the point to show it doesn’t matter there are always more of them
I think that there’s some kind of message here like “in a sci-fi world where life and death is created endlessly and we might all have false memories, does anything really matter” because of the fact that there seemed to be a fuck ton of growth for rick that didn’t mean shit because all of them were fake, and the realization that the real rick can’t ever accept his problems because he knows he’s real, and when you’re real and immortal nothing does matter.
or i don’t know i’m probably just overanalyzing
I think we did see the rick, I’m not sure if I should believe the dialogue, but they mentioned the decoys were self contained to “terrestrial activities” which makes me believe space rick was the real one. But then again, they might have mentioned that decoys don’t make decoys (maybe i didnt hear it right)
Seeing the President not give AF now is nice to see. Also lol at Diet Coke
That episode FLEW BY
Really felt like some season 1 shit but with high-budget animation
Cannot wait for ep3
I wanted a Scottish Spaniard Rick with a sword to show up.
Season 5 coming out the gate real strong.
I’m gonna be honest, I hated that episode. Not one joke made me laugh, and the concept alienated me. I don’t know, it just wasn’t entertaining
I think the show suffers when the crew wastes 20 minutes trolling the audience for the lols
The new writers seem to do this a lot. Seasons 1-3 were still way out there and wacky but they kept consistent while sprinkling in plot progression and back story. Seasons 4 and onward still has funny wacky episodes but they are more “nothing really matters we’ll just hit the reset botton next episode” and to me it contrasts sharply with the earlier seasons of the show. It’s still funny and creative at times but ultimately pointless
That 'Who wants to live forever' cover tho
Not a cover. That was the Queen original.
I wonder what Jerry’s job interview was for
Am I a decoy? Can one of you check my ass?
Jerry tried to fit himself in a fridge
