Jeff Bezos is offering to cover billions in costs if NASA remedies its 'mistake' and gives Blue Origin the chance to compete with SpaceX again for a moon-lander contract

Knute5

Isn't that essentially an institutional bribe? He competed and lost. Does buckets of money void a contract?

ThatGuy8

He did the same thing with the government cloud project that lost to Microsoft and they overturned it saying “our needs have changed”. Nothing to say it won’t work here too.

StrongAbbreviations5

To be clear, SpaceX did EXACTLY this in their initial bid which is why they came in SO much lower than the entire rest of the aerospace industry for the project. Government contacts encourage this kind of corporate investment in the project since it shows intent to commercialize the technology outside the government supported dev process. 2B is just FAR outside the potential corporate investment level for this that its clearly basically a personally donation. That's why Blue objected to the bid process, they didn't know that was an option

ThatGuy8

“Didn’t know” Jeff can’t handle losing. He sucks at government lobbying. He was the last to make it to space. He lost the government cloud contract. He lost the NASA contract. His wife left him. But he is the richest man in the world. It’s lonely at the top.

StrongAbbreviations5

yikes. you seem to be really upset, might want to talk to someone about that my dude. He's doing what literally every government contractor does, objecting to big programs awarded to a competitor. Not to mention, in this scenario he has a decent argument on a few fronts given the surprising way NASA awarded the contract and the amount SpaceX was clearly covering for the project. Not that you have any idea what I'm talking about or any interest in knowing, Bezos BAD... got it. Seriously, you shouldn't be so upset about something like this. Betterhelp that shit man, anger will ruin your life EDIT - should also note the bid Blue was principal on was actually a conglomeration of literally every single other major aerospace player in the country. Lockheed, Raytheon, Ball... the entire industry. No one expected a sole award at this stage, NASA to fund the direct competitor to their biggest programs (SLS), or SpaceX to say they would cover $2B in dev costs in their proposal...

ThatGuy8

If you were half as smart as you think you are you might be able to understand how what you just said makes you look about half as smart as you potentially might be. Thanks for the info. Read the list of competition they were up against again and tell me why I should feel sorry for Jeff? I always laugh at these companies when they lose a big government contract and complain. It’s funny. I’m finding mirth and happiness in watching this. You are way too bought in to something here. Either you work directly in it or you are watching it like it’s team sports. Hate to break it to you. You’re not getting on that spaceship when it finally leaves this sorry planet. No mater how hard you cheer.

StrongAbbreviations5

lol, how much time did you spend yesterday being angry at other people for being more successful than you?

ThatGuy8

Zero. I spent more of my day being happy about the fact that I was pretty satisfied with where I am in life. You know it can be possible to objectively disagree with something and not let it effect you on an emotional level right? I just don’t believe anyone should be worth multiple hundreds of billions of dollars when there are people who literally don’t have homes. Where do I say anything about being upset that someone is more successful than me? You’re a bad troll.

StrongAbbreviations5

Ya, I'm sure mom's basement playing WoW is a comfy life... keep telling yourself that bud

ThatGuy8

Oooh meme insults! Sorry I don’t support orgs that are under investigation for poor workplace policies who treat their workers like shit. I wonder when Amazon will be investigated for union busting... They say insults are a mirror into what the aggressor is insecure about so to add on to the meme insults maybe go outside?

xness151x

In america? Yes.

despitegirls

NASA went with SpaceX because funding allowed them to choose only one of the three companies (Dynetics was the third). Blue Origin's bid was about twice SpaceX'. Seems like the guy whose company is undercutting its own vendors with their own products would understand that the lowest cost typically gets the bid.

ergzay

Also the thing that people always skip, SpaceX had the best score, even ignoring how much each program cost. That made SpaceX the winner, but they still needed to go to SpaceX to get them to go cheaper.

ApatheticPopoto

You spelled "bribe" wrong

shogi_x

Sounds like a bald faced bribe to get a NASA contract. >In June, the Senate passed a tech-and-science bill that included an amendment to the bill that would allocate an extra $10 billion to the moon-lander program and require NASA to pick a second company in addition to SpaceX. If Bezos believes in competition so much then he can compete for that second slot like everyone else.

hasher_roth

Institutional bribes are what make american capitalism. What the difference between his 2b proposal and paying millions in campaign contributions?

stoptakinmanames

Yeah, it would be illegal for the US to accept this, and it's probably illegal to have even suggested it. I have a feeling somewhere in some Amazon office that handles government contracts there is a 5 alarm fire of people running around saying, "JESUS FUCKING CHRIST HE JUST SAID WHAT PUBLICLY?"

delfinom

Blue Origin partnered with ULA for the bid. That extra slot is literally meant for them. The good ol MIC gets their kickbacks.

meme_a_licious

I know Elon is a dick as well, but he has worked hard to get NASA's contract and this mf just tryna bribe them

invol713

True. If I had to side with either/or, it’s Elon 10/10 times. At least he has always been about furthering the technology.

Rockhardsimian

Plus on business I’d say Bezos has a slight edge and on technology Musk has the edge. Also the edge Bezos has might just be he’s down to treat his workers a bit shittier than Musk.

Kanthabel_maniac

I dont know about that. Till now to me it seems Bezos is only good at patent trolling, lobby and whining. I may be wrong tho

Rockhardsimian

Hard to argue with results, what other metric can we quantify or measure ?

Steinrikur

If this bribe passes, I hope Elon starts SpaceY and SpaceZ spinoffs to compete for this slot.

Elevenst

Fuck that space cowboy clown. I'm sick of watching these tech money brats do whatever they want and people hail them as heroes. Besides funding this pissing contest, they aren't the ones doing the real work. Just PR and tagging along. Fuck you Jeff.

appleinyourhole

Someone’s mad

invol713

On the fence with this one. Granted competition is good for innovation, I don’t like the idea of Bezos getting whatever he wants with more money thrown at something.

TheBeardofGilgamesh

Well also, Bezos is a liar, he says he will remove billions, but in the end NASA would still end up paying those extra billions. SpaceX has proven technology and are way further along and as promised launching with SpaceX is way less expensive than anyone else.

Kanthabel_maniac

I dont know in thise last few years he tried to bribe lobby and suing contracts. How well has that worked? He got zero or perhaps a demo contract and few small experiments for the new sheppard thats it. Elon at least has rockets capable to orbit and beyond. Bezos does not. There is the New glenn. But it has been indevelopment in the last 6-7years.

sissybutt9

Sounds like a bribe. Those used to be illegal.

SocietyWatcher

That's where you're wrong. They were never illegal if you are part of the top 10%, and almost expected with the top 1%. Bribes are only illegal for us.

I_Fux_Hard

The dudes space dick can't even make it to space.

Kanthabel_maniac

He cant get it up....to orbit

ItsObvious_c_it

“Pay to play” is supposed to be illegal, no? 🙄

Bear5939

That's a bribe but America is run by criminals, so who cares

CREATORWILD

Billionaires trying to out billionaire each other is the epitome of late stage capitalism.

jbraden

NASA is funded by American tax payers, so if Bezos wants a shot at a bid, he should start by paying his taxes. I would up it even more by saying any person and company should have to pay ALL their taxes before being considered for federally contracted bids. No more breaks, no more loopholes. You've made X amount of money between Jan 1st through Dec 31st, you owe X monies. To be fair, SpaceX is in the same boat.

Carbidereaper

If they’re going to pay their “fair share” Jeff will need to get past his board of directors which represent all of the stock holders in the company that are not the ceo which have the final say in any financial actions involving the company. the board of directors will demand that amazon pay only what they are legally obligated to pay if Jeff goes against the board of directors he will get voted out of his company and someone new will replace him as ceo. if you want to get Rid of loopholes then get rid of business taxes that’s we’re all business tax deductions loopholes come from

captain_poptart

Remember, we all paid for this

Tinashemuc3

give me those BILLIONs than wasting them 😂️😂️😂️

Tinashemuc3

atelier_bml

Fuck. Off. Asshole.

perspicat8

Jeff who?

seedsnearth

Come on, Jeffrey, you can do it! Pave the way, put your back into it!

eldido

Take the billions and let him compete again and lose ...

Goldenart121

Essentially a bribe for them to possibly choose a worse company
