Just finished this walnut and maple bed with a live edge headboard. Steel legs, black palm tusks.

Love how it looks. My shins on the other hand started crying.
Lol I thought the same thing. Incredible work though.
The corner on my bed sticks out a couple inches and catches my girlfriend and I just under the kneecap far too often.
This bed looks nice, but this man will have bruised shins as a constant feature in his life.
Mine is made from dimensional lumber so sticks out 1.5 inches and I still hit it. This bed would finish me, as amazing as it looks.
No man could ask for a more noble death.
Maybe my wife waking up for work at midnight and waking me up screaming but more likely my dumb ass hitting it every single day even after I think to myself don't smack your leg on the ahhh bloody mother of hell I did it again
It is really beautiful…
First assumption is that anyone sleeping in the space would not take legal action.
The perspective of a safety agency reviewer may be of interest just in case you were to commercialize the frame design features.
Yep, same comment as everyone else: looks great but the first time you (or someone) hits their shin or ankle the design flaw will be glaring.
I came here to say this… whether walking in from work at 4am or getting up to use the bathroom I walk like a zombie and would never remember. I still trip over the bed that we’ve had forever.
Your wife/gf is going to cuss those beautiful things at 3:27 AM when she goes to the bathroom.
You will cut them off or kick her out promptly the next morning around 8:47 AM
Exactly what I came to post. Looks amazing tho
Those corners would be sealed with an extra vanish of blood if this were in my room. I mean, it's beautiful enough to be with the price, but it would still be paid in blood. So much blood
Yeah was think the same. Cool look though.
Yep! I already do that on my platform bed that only sticks out about half an inch from the mattress
A nice chest at the foot of the bed will help. Then just shave down the sides a bit maybe?
I agree, looks amazing otherwise.
There needs to be federal regulations enforcing the rounding of the corners of all bed frames. Lethal. My shins won't ever recover.
My thoughts 💭 as well
Came to echo the exact sentiments! Wonderful looking, but my shins already ache from seeing it! Good job!!
Just walk carefully. Knock on wood I haven't run into it yet.
Just cover the pokies with pool noodles and you'll be fine.
Then it becomes a water bed
Knock on wood (with shins)
Or is knocking on wood if you have run into it?
It’s like that old saying, “when the bed is knocking, don’t come walking!”
Just wait for the day that you have to use the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Sorry to say but there's a lot of pain in your future 🤣🤣 Looks amazing, that's for sure. Get some foam to put over all those sharp bits...
Your shins will knock on wood plenty. You really didn’t think this one through. There’s a reason nobody does this.
They sell these little knit “socks” for furniture. They’re intended for chairs, but I bet a larger one might fit that tenon. Could at least soften the block when you hit that in the middle of the night.
I think the point is them being visible, if they didn’t want them to be seen I don’t think they would’ve designed it this way
Of course. That’s the point of building it that way.
But once you hit your shin the third time during your midnight bathroom break, you start thinking about other options. I had a bed with a decorative protrusion/angle. Broke my toe twice on that SOB, but I was a kid so nothing was done about it. When you’re an adult you make some adjustments because no one stopping you.
I agree I would never even have to worry about it at all but my wife and it sounds like a lot of other people are absolutely oblivious to where they are on a regular basis.
No worries you knock the wood eventually lol looks nice tgough
You'll run into it a couple times, but then it'll be automatic to step around. Great work!
Came here hoping this was the first comment. Was not disappointed
Is everyone on reddit incredibly clumsy? This is always the top comment on any project that doesn't have safety rounded corners...
I don't consider myself very clumsy (that title goes to my husband who will walk into a table or chair that's been in the same spot for years). But even I will occasionally forget about the shin buster on the back of my truck. The reminder to cap that sucker when I'm not using it is painful.
What a pretty way to damage yourself
Those corners, my shins bleed for your forgiveness
It's very pretty, I'm just concerned about the trailer hitches on the sides.
My thoughts exactly…just kicked mine the other day.
The amount of times the owner of this bed will break their shins in the middle of the night is unfathomable.
I look forward to seeing the modified tendon of the foot board. Looks nice, but will remove a lot of skin in a short time.
The tendon is what you injure when you hit your shin on the tenon. Hahaha. I'll show myself out.
Just plotting the future “TIFU and bruised my shin and fell and broke my collarbone” post. He’s playing the karma long game.
Shin smasher 9000
To avoid hitting shins I would install a spring at the head of the bed to launch me out beyond the foot of the bed when I get up. I believe the acme Corp would have an appropriate spring.
Great idea but how do you get back in?
If the room is big enough, balloons. Otherwise another spring, but with this you risk bouncing back and forth forever.
Bro I’ve broken my toe on the bottom of the bed frame that is not even sticking out. That joinery looks nice but it’s a huge no from me. It’s a matter of when, not if, you wreck your shin on that bad boy.
I broke my toe two weeks ago by accidentally kicking a couch leg. This shit makes me cringe.
Function > Form
You might as well just put some trailer hitches on your bed frame lol. It looks cool though
The first thing I noticed is the ankle busters on the ends. Sooner or later, someone is gonna get out of bed in the middle of the night and bang their leg on that thing. Not gonna be happy.
Other than that, nicely done.
How tall are your ankles?
I have a tendency to walk on my tippie toes in the middle of the night. Lol
Haha then this would probably break your ankles!!
That is just beautiful, very nice joinery, but personally I don't like having to wear much to bed, particularly shin pads.
I've been pondering how to make a bed for myself for a while now, I really like that slab headboard so maybe I'll make a similar one.
This is the only comment I can find without a reference to shin damage.
But it does have a reference to shin damage
Ugh, please downvote me for poor reading comprehension. This is the only way I'll learn to pay more attention. Thanks.
Downvoted first comment, upvoted this one.
Perfectly balanced, as all things should be.
[Little one, it's a simple calculus.](http://gph.is/29EeEYI)
Looks amazing and my condolences to your shins.
Watch your ankles in the night.
Those points are \~16 inches off the ground, so your ankles are plenty safe. It'll catch you right below the knee tho, if you have no spatial awareness.
Oh you gone learn soon
No spatial awareness? My bed sticks out about 2 inches beyond the mattress, and yes it took about year before I had sudden rather painful lapse of spatial awareness, just below knee, a special kind of pain. At least you'll be mentally prepared when it's your turn.
It's a beautiful bed but I'm gonna have to wear shin guards walking around your bedroom.
Looks sick, and to make a redundant point, it’s gonna be a gory mess once the comforter goes over the bed and hangs over where you can’t even see those leg killers.
How excited are you to blast a shin on those at 2am?
My shins are very scared for you.
Looks beautiful, but I would smash my shins on that thing every day.
Nope, I'd constantly be yelling fucking god damn fuck my fucking shins god damn it.
I'm getting a Flintstones vibe from this.
Exactly what I thought too. Looks like the Flintstones car: dark wood frame and light stone 'tires' in front and back.
We've arrived at the first shin-less comment!!!
Is there a single comment that doesn't contain the word 'shins'
Good thing you built a side table to hold your shin pads. Nice build.
Please post an update after you cut them off so we can see the final product.
Good for sleeping, and for my Muay Thai shin training!
Why do you hate your shins?
Great band. One of my favorite songs is called Phantom Limb, which is what OP will be experiencing after a few weeks with this bed.
Beautiful but I guarantee your shins are not going to like you
Bro you got some nice shin killers right there
That's beautiful work but "Ow, my shin!".
Bossfight: The shin destroyer, destroyer of shins
My shins are in agony
Looks beautiful but I'd SMOKE MY SHINS HARD on that bed!
I see you installed the shin breakers. Bold choice!
Beautiful!! RIP, shins
There go my shins
I love this, but my shins don't. Oof I can feel the bruises
Superb wood work!! R.I.P. shins
It's very pretty, but… shin stabbers.
That is some quality craftsmanship, you've wrought. Fine construction and tight joints. But, oh, [the wounds](https://thumbs.dreamstime.com/b/bruise-wound-woman-s-shin-selective-focus-148734618.jpg) that [hostile](https://cdn2.vectorstock.com/i/1000x1000/31/36/angry-cute-bed-character-cartoon-vector-18033136.jpg) architecture will inflict.
r/mildlyinfuriating for me sorry
Looks like my shins hurt
And this is what we call:
Beautifully Crafted; Terribly Engineered
Bravo, OP. Your attention to detail and your aesthetic have turned what could be a boring, standard bed into a work of art. It's very well done. Maybe next time don't listen to the Good Idea Fairy when she suggests protrusions at shin/knee height. It might be worth looking into larger mattress sizes and some kind of insert/spacer that would remain invisible while allowing the frame to support a mattress that matches or exceeds the dimensions of the shin-hazards.
My shins are crying my bed doesn’t jet out and my ankle still finds it
That’s an absolutely beautiful piece of furniture but I would absolutely destroy my shins on the pieces sticking out like that. I’m too clumsy to own something like this.
I've never hated anything more in my life than a bedframe with ankle/shin crushers.
Looks beautiful tho.
Get back to us in 3 months LOL😘
It's beautiful to look at. I love the live edge headboard. Those protruding tenons at the four corners are [trippy](https://www.graphicproducts.com/assets/images/products/841-label.png) ... but [not](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/83/4b/25/834b257e0c6a6e148f4953b07d507dab.gif) in a good way.
It’s an incredibly beautiful aesthetic. I do love the way it looks. But I can guarantee you from experience with a vaguely similar form bed frame - you are gonna hit your shin and leg on the bits sticking out at the foot of the bed - Constantly. You will curse the bed daily, and curse yourself for doing it over and over, despite knowing it’s there.
Or maybe that’s just me.
That’s a beautiful knee banger ♥️😂
I'm looking at this like wow very lovely and at the same time I'm looking at that part poking out just begging to break someone shin in the coming days
So do you just not love your legs, orrrrr….
Project PAIN: complete
My shins are swollen and bleeding already
You are gonna wreck your ankles on that bed!
Beautiful but I would rack my shins every time I got out of it.
RIP your shins
pretty but my shins are scared.
I felt that pain at first glance.
That looks incredible!
As to the shins issue… our bed has tall posts at the foot of the bed. Aesthetically I hate them. But they make navigating our small bedroom at night in the dark so much easier. I just reach out and find the posts and then use that to guide myself. Perhaps you can find similar guides to help navigate around the bed while preserving your shins.
Pretty work. My shins hurt from looking at those through tenons.
My shins hurt just seeing that
RIP to your shins
Beautiful work, but the owner of this bed is a fashion victim.
I wrecked my shins just looking at this!
Gorgeous work though.
Oh your poor shins.
Bro do you even shin? Lovely work
Looks really sweet but i am worried about your shin.
I have a similar style of bed frame that i lovingly refer to as the shin basher… have fun haha
It’s Beautiful! But if I had that bed my shins would forever be bruised lol
You’ll need some shin guards and a mouth guard from all those falls.
Looks like this bed hates people in general
Beautiful. RIP shins.
RIP OP’s shins
Are you a millionaire? How much did all this wood cost?
What’s the joint betwixt headboard and back rail?
Headboard has threaded inserts in the back of it, and then the two posts coming up from the head of the bed have two counterbored holes for bolts.
Yeah there's no way I would survive those damn corner things. Could you just sort of slice those off for me? Thanks, man.
My poor shins! Given that, it's exquisitely beautiful, well done.
Looks beautiful, but fuck my shins.
Quite a few bandwagon comments here.
But really pretty.
Yes, I also thought "That's a gorgeous bed!!! That reminds me. I need to pick up bandaids later."
The pinned mortise and tenons look great, I just hope no one accidentally bumps into them in the middle of the night. Still looks awesome tho!!!
This model is called the Shin Cracker 3000.
my shin hurts just looking at the picture
I love how every comment is this is awesome, but prepare to get your shins destroyed.
I feel like this is the indoor version of running into the hitch on your truck.
Great looking bed but I'd be careful for those corners they look like some real ankle breakers 💥 you might bust off your big toe on those.
Do you hate your shins or something?
Great work…I know I would cracks my shins on that base board
Guys, him and his partner might do Muay Thai. It's all part of their shin conditioning routine. Very practical OP
Incredible execution, for sure, but damn that’s gonna hurt a lot
That belongs in a million dollar cabin on a lake
I would use it in the guest bedroom so they don't stay long.
Beautiful work. I love the headboard.
The Shin Crusher design. Looks nice though
It’s super beautiful man but my shins hurt so bad
That thing is a death trap for seniors. I see broken shins in your future.
Ya, sorry my shins hurt just looking at it. Beautiful bed though!
Nice work but you must hate your ankles.
This is beautiful. Hilarious the amount of people on this sub who apparently don't have any spacial awareness and just flail their limbs about. Don't let them get you down.
We could replace a land mine with this thing
This is gorgeous but I would 100% bust the sh*t out of my shin in this.
Wood smash on that
Quite awesome. The whole thing works together. Harmonious. Good choice on rounding the bottom edge of the footboard. It echoes the curve of the headboard.
That's the best use of live edge in a bed frame / headboard I've seen. And that includes from some of the "names" on Instagram. Props.
Nice wood. Terrible design. Learn from it and keep trying.
Wow. That’s beautiful. You’ve done an amazing job!
Your work is very pretty
You’ll hate yourself in a few days after your shins keep running into those poles sticking out
That. Is. Really. Nice.
This is gorgeous! Now all you need is a sea view, translucent curtains and some pleasant wind. :D
Good effort. Hideous though
The joinery looks beautiful. Very skillful work there. But the design is garbage. Not much design thought went into this piece. Sometimes form *must* follow function. Either you'll be cursing some night, or your customer will be cursing you. Sorry bud, I don't sugarcoat since this isn't kindergarten.
Looks really good
That looks awesome. How is it elevated off the floor?
There are welded steel tube legs that bolt to the bottom of the slat structure, recessed a foot from the edge so you don't really see them.
In the first picture you can just see the tube peaking out from behind the footboard.
Beautiful! Love how the wood grain pops and your butterfly placement. Congratulations.
I'll be counting the days till you modify the foot of the bed.
Nicely done skill wise, but not my style and RIP your shins. No thank you
Wow this is beautiful
Love the use of natural wood tones. Very beautiful.
I banged my shin just looking at that tenon. That said, it's friggin beautiful!
